Finally fixing up my '79 RX-7
I am finally gonna put work in to my '79 rx-7. I was wondering if I should keep the 12A engine or put different engine in? This is my first Rotory and I'm still studying up on them.

Hi and welcome. Thats a decision youll have to make. Why would you want to change it? More power? How bout upping the power in the 12A? How much power do you want/need? WHats the purpose of the car? All these need to be thought about to come to a decision.

I was just wondering if the 12a is a good engine performance wise. Are there alot of performance parts for it because I've really only seen parts for '83 models and up

a Rotory is not like a V8. a V8 you can do heads, cam, exeaset, intake, carb, and other little stuff.
On a Rotory, 12A, 13B, with out FI or opening the motor you can do Intake/Carb, and Exeast. Normal is to use a www.RacingBeat.com exeast hearder and then replace the stock carb and intake with a weber. this will put the 100Hp 12A into the 125 ish range. Next is to open the motor and have it ported. A nice street port does Great and puts you at 150ish Hp. Next step is FI if you like that kind of stuff. The 12a is a 1.1 L engine, the 13b is a 1.3L So you could do the swap first and then do the above to the 13b and get a little more power out of it.
You can get a lot more extreme with what you do to these but it starts getting into a lot of money.
My 79 still has the 12a in it. it was opened up and ported good, weber Carb and RB exeast, It has real good power and is fun to drive. If I keep the tach out of the red I can make it to 90mph in the top of 3rd, 100mph if I hit the buzzer before shiffting.

I got my 79 a couple months ago and have been fixing it up ever since. I've found many performance parts for it, but im trying to keep it stock for the time being because they're pretty rare. Soon though, im gonna break down and hot rod it. I think the 79/ 12a is a great platform to work with
