Talking FINALLY DROVE IT!!! But...

Ok, well I finally got her out onto the road. Its fun to put around with that full RB exhaust . It sure does seem to have helped the mid-upper RPM range through 1st & 2nd. Unfourtunatly, I dont think it did that much else where, other than make it sound cool as hell. Actually, It did . Before when I would floor the car it would definatly take longer to rev up and gain speed. I find myself flooring the car now, and hitting the brakes as to not hit ther person in front of me before I even shift . Anyway, I have come up with a few problems that I wanna look into.

1. The rear end is making a noise like its "dry" although its full of oil. Would an oil change fix this? Or maybe bearings? To me, when I hear it, the first thing that comes to my head is "low LSD fluid" but as stated before, its full. PLus, the roads were wet, and I was peeling out, the car pulles funnly and it feels like only one wheel is spinning...But it left two marks on the pavement ...

2. The shifter ******* rattles, lol. I have read MazdaTrix's article about this and they say that its car specific, and they dont really know how to fix it. Its not that big of a deal, but its just annoyng. It makes a buzz sound anyhting over 4K unless you have your hand holding a tiny bit of pressure on it (like just resting you hand on it, kinda pulling it into gear).

3. I have a damn oil leak!! I dont know, but I think my POS water/oil cooler is leaking. I parked in the garage last night, and now there three little spots of oil about the size of dimes on the floor...GRRRR. I got to looking, and it looks like its dripping from the cooler, onto the rear rotor housing and then off of there...Damn it.

4. Someone butchered the wiring under the dash behind the radio...I think I have a diagram somewhere, but it just pisses me off. I sat out there last night with a volt meter trying to figure out what does what. The wires I think should be constant (like what should go to the clock) arent, or they are switched with the key...I was gonna put my CD player in cause theres no radio, but I didnt wanna mess with the stock wires, I dont know how they work, lol.

5. There is WAY WAY WAY too much free play in the steering. I gotta find that website that shows how to adjuast it. Ive seen it in like 3 places, but of course, I never remember where...Anyone know? Now I know why my cover is still on the adjustor, lol. Its never been adjusted . I can litterly turn the wheel 1/4 way around before anything happens . Its scary...

EDIT: I searched and found the sites. Odly enough, I even told someone else where it was a while back, lol I told you I knew

6. Some "weight challenged" indivisual had the car before me, and the seats are crushed down pretty bad. I sit like 4" lower in this car than the last one, and the side bolsters are as flat as the back of the seat. The back of the seat is actually so flattened that when you sit in it, the head rest sticks out further. So its like somehting is pussing your chin into your chest. I guess its not quite that bad, but you get the idea...

7. I want more power

Sorry for the long post, but I just wanted to share as much as I could without post whoring it up in this place .

~T.J.

PS - Have yet to get plates, but I passed the inspection and got all the papers. Im going to get the plates and title/registration today!! Then, Im getting new tires in a few days!!! JOY!!!

Congratulations! Look at the bright side now that it is on the road you can tackle the little projects 1 by 1 until they are done and still drive it in the mean time! I can't wait until mine is road worthy!

Thanks man. Thats my idea, just keep hitting the small stuff until its all good.

One more thing that need looked into is the starter. I think the solenoid is going bad. Sometimes the starter just turns without engaging, and others it works decent, but makes some weird noises like the solenoid is flaking out...Its hard to describe. I have a starter from a parts car Ill throw in soon though.

mine does that smae ****.. sometimes, and only sometimes when i turn the key, it sounds like its grinding against the fly wheel. but when i try it again after a few seconds, it turns the engine over fine. its weird. and when i put my header on, i looked at it, and it looks fairly new.

Well see mine just doesnt go anywhere...No grinding or anything, the starter just turns, the solenoid doesnt move the gear to the flywheel to even grind on it.

Ive had starters do that, change it. Get the 2 orings for the POS beehive, and save some money to get a REAL oil cooler! LOL. Glad to hear you got her on the road TJ! . WHat kinda noise is the rear making? is it whinning? increasing in pitch with speed? Then its the ring and pinion. Aint no fix for that soz.

My starter does the same grinding noise. Its anoying as hell, especailly in a gas station when everyone looks at you weird. When I got the car, the guy said he thought there was a chip on the flywheel. But there isn't anything wrong with the flywheel, so the starter is the culprit.

I guess you could call it a whining that goes with the speed, regardless of if the clutch is in or out. Just as long as the car is rolling.

All rotaries' shifters rattle. They've been doing that since the starting of time itself (the cosmo sport) for there was nothing before (the cosmo sport) and it was and as it still is.

Sorry TJ, sounds like a bad R&P. no fixing it. Live with the noise. You are saying it increases in pitch with RPM right? getting higher and higher? Eventually you'll have to replace it. Sorry man, but I drove mine like that for 2 years before I got sick of it and replace the whole pumpkin.

They only rattle if the anti rattle spring is busted, which they often are.

Yup, I agree. Wack the solenoid a couple of times with a hammer while having someone try to start it. Oh, and make sure the car is out of gear when you do that I've done this a couple of times on two different cars...seems that Fords are the worst for this. After awhile though a good wack will no longer fix it and THEN it is finally time to replace it.

Speaking of Fords and not to steal the thread, but a friend of mine's dad has three Ford Rotary Engines! His dad was working for Ford's R&D at the time they were investigating the rotary.
