Fiero/Taurus Electric Fan
I've heard that these fans can be 'fitted' against the radiator of a 1st gen. Is the CFM produced comparable to that of the Black Magic fan? Thanks.

I don't know, the stock clutch fan pulls a lot of air... and makes a cool tornado noise when you take off
I find my clutch fan works perfectly, and when I took it off to put on 2 12" electric fans, I didn't notice any power gain. So I put the clutch fan back on ALONG with the 2 12" electrics... lotsa cooling power, and my car never gets above 1/2 way, even on 40 degree days...

My black magic is very good...I can feel the air exiting the underside of the car when parked with the door opened.
The installation was also pretty easy, except the mounting brackets provided took some creativity to make work.

I've got the fan from a '90 Taurus SHO and it works great. The problem with junkyard fans is that you will never find specs on how much CFM they'll pull, and it's pretty hard to even find out how many Amps they need too without just measuring directly. I measured the SHO fan to pull 30-35Amps for that split second on initial startup and then it levels out around 13 or so while it's running. Brings the ol' temp right down though and the shroud fits our radiators perfectly. That's the downside to some of the aftermarket fans is that they won't come with as much of a shroud (if any). There's my 2 cents.

These tests were done on a basically stock 84 GSL w/ the stock gauge, on different days, so there wasn't much control, but the temps were 95-98F
W/ my stock fan and Radiator, I could raise the temps past the middle of the gauge by just driving spirited for more than 2 minutes, and it would retain the heat until turned off, and allowed to sit and cool.
W/ my stock fan and a BeCool Aluminum universal radiator for Chevrolets, Driving hard with the AC on would bring temps up, but as soon as I slowed, or turned the AC off, the temps would drop
W/ a Fiero fan (on low setting) and the Al Radiator, I could get the temps up w/ the AC on while idleing for extended times and driving while holding RPM's above 4K. temps would drop as soon as one contributing factor changed.
W/ Fiero fan (on high setting) and the same Al Radiator, I couldn't get the gauge to move at idle or even with sustained High RPM (7k) w/ the AC on.
I haven't been able to do any more testing because the 12A decided to pop an apex seal. The 13B has been ported and assembled. I'm just waiting on a few accessories before the install.

hey Manntis, Not all us folks that live in the US are so daft as to asume that when you say 40 Degrees and are talking about the radiator that you mean c. not F. Frankly, your assumption offends me. In the interest of international relations, I sugest you offer me your car and we can forget the whole thing Deal?

Universal Chevy Al Radiator made by BeCool, purchased from Summit a couple years ago for another Rotary project. This model is a single flow, but they now have a dual flow that would put the inlet/outlet on the same side, making things much easier. IIRC it was about $300 once shipped, but it's been a while.

My post was also in jest, a little over the top I Guess but I was kidding TOO. you guys from way up north are fun but crossing the border sucks lately. the last time I came up for a vistit they damn near tore my car apart. I don't think I look like that much of a trouble maker.

I also had to get creative w/ the heater bypass hose. I cut the bottom outlet off of the old radiator, and put it in-line with the lower radiator hose.
