A Few Questions - Stock Tranny/Advice

Hey. I have 2 questions. First, how much power can the stock tranny hold? That's the easy one. The second is asking for advice. I wanna get my first gen into the 200HP range or so, maybe a little more, but with 200HP i'll be pretty happy. To do this I've decided to streetport/rebuild it and get a new carb. With 200HP, will I need a new tranny? That'll be quite a bit of money. So, I could do all that, but it'll cost so much money would it be worth it? I mean I could get a second gen for that amount probably, and walk my first gen easily. The thing is, I love first gens. I would love to have a first gen with 200HP, just getting there is the problem. Do you guys know any better ways to get there than I'm thinking? SP/Rebuild, Weber Carb, TII tranny if I have to get a new one. Any estimates on how much that would cost? I'd get a new carb btw, not rebuild one. Any input is appreciated. Thanks guys.

I'm not sure if the 12a trans will hold up but I believe a GSL-SE trans would. That is if you are getting 200 HP NA (no turbo or supercharger) because what matters in the way of a tranny, rear end etc would be torque and a 12a that makes 200hp NA wouldn't make torque close to that maybe 140-150 ft lbs. (Im pretty sure of this but correct me if im wrong) I'd think that just an SE tranny would hold up fine if you didn't dump the clutch constantly from 7k. If you need an SE tranny I have an extra.

Thanks a lot jeremy. What do you think about spending all that money, when I could get a nice second gen GTU (one for sale near my house) with 72k on it, for about 3-4k. That's what it'd cost to get my first gen up to 200HP. Do you think it's worth it for the first gen? I love my car, that's why I'm so torn. Thx again for your help/advice.

It really depends on what you want. I say go with the TII swap You can get a used j-spec motor for like $1100 at www.fc3s.org i think.

HA, as if thats the only thing you need...... lol.....

Honestly if your only shooting for 200Hp, just port it. The tranny will hold cause the lack of torque. High HP NA rotories don't make much more than about 150 ft-lbs, they just make it high in the rpm range. You could get a professional rebuild and porting for about half of what it would take to get a descent 13BT setup in your car. I don't know about the carb, I lean to EFI myself, but it's not cheap either.
