a few questions about my 85 gsl-se
ok so I finally got my 85 gsl-se and was looking at the engine and found a hose on the passengers side near the firewall coming from the engine with hot air coming out of it......its bout an inch around jw wtf this is.....also ive heard people say keep the rats nest and dont keep the rats nest what to do??? and does anyone know a good tut for it....i got 56k so i dont wanna d/l the 25meg tuts i see... i was also goin through my list of things to do and one was replace the air filter and i want a cold air and i want to get rid of that big contraption they call an air box so how do i go from that to a cone filter??? any ideas??

The stock air box will draw in better cold air than a cone will, unless you are willing to hack a hole in the body to put the cone outside of the engine bay or build a cold air box.
There is a tutorial in the 2nd gen section that I posted the link to in another here the other days. If you don't know what the hose is you asked about, I suggest you study up on the emission systems before you attempt the rats nest removal, which in my opinion, is not worth the effort in the FI engines.

The hose that you are refuring to has to do with the smog system. With the question of removing the rats nest I am assuming that you no longer have the Air Pump along with the rest of the smog control. If this is the case, just go to the autoparts store and purchase a vacuum cap to plug this hole that is allowing hot air out. More than likely at this time the car should not be idling properly due to that huge vacuum leak. So there will be a noticable difference at idle along with performance.
To further on the question about removing the vacuum nest... I would always recommend leaving the vacuum nest on a -SE motor due to the selnoids that are needed for proper idle control among a few other things. On a 12a motor it doesnt make as much of a difference to remove it or not. Now if you are planning on to go Carb, then you will not need any of this. If you stay EFI I would highly recommend leaving this system as is, unless going stand alone ECU so that it will be controlled. You will find yourself having more problems later if removed.
I agree with trochoid on this. The stock air box is not that bad actually. The best thing to do would be to buy the K&N replacment filter for the stock air box and make a ram air system into the top/side of the box. Makes for a cleaner setup along with making it more efficient. On a cone filter, yes raming air into the front of it will allow the intake to suck in the cold air. With a ram air going into the air box the intake will be able to use all of the fresh air brought in.

What is this Ram Air you speak of? Are you refering to a similar setup that Longduck has on his GSL-SE? This is a route that i want to head in the near future.
