A few 12a questions, and carbs too

Ok, Im new to rotaries and carbs...(i know i know, im an FI bitch).lol. Anyways, just bought an 83 GSL with a 12a...has 70K on the motor, was owned by my g/f uncle since it was new, car is great condition minus expected wear of being in california. Engine runs beautifully. Now I have never had a rotary or ever worked on a rotary or a carb for that matter...this one happens to have both...I bought the car for $700 and is going to be a dd for about 10 mos while im in the police academy. I would love to make this faster and clean it up into a respectable weekend warrior for my days off. I found the search button and have relized that for any true hp, and torque gains i will need to either go forced induction or port the engine and go with a better carb or upgrade the nikki. If someone could point me in the right direction of how to go about this and where to start looking for parts i would appreciate it...Im not new to working on stuff, have built up a couple nice 4x4 trucks but have no experience with rotaries and could use a helping hand...anyone who knows of an existing post that has a good basic build up plan would be great, or if someone would like to take pity upon me and help out I would appreciate that as well...Im doing this on a budget as all my money from work goes into paying for school. I would prefer to drop no more than $1500 into this project. Thanks for all the help.

Also, for the money am i better off going with an upgraded carb or going with the holley intake system available from racing beat? It says about 20 hp increase with a good header exhaust system...what type of gains should i expect with the RB Exhaust system (head to tip) and the holley system. Compared to the cost of a turbo system, also could someone explain how a turbo works on a carb? I've only been exposed to F.I systems, thanks. and how much should i expect to pay for a turbo setup ???

If I only had 1,500 bucks to work with I would do these things in this order:

1. Full Racing Beat exhaust/header.
2. Nikki carb modified by Sterling/Carl.
3. Then, either shocks or tires depending on what you have now.

There are a lot of other free to cheap things you can do to. Electric fan for radiator, remove rat's nest, 2nd Gen direct fire ignition.

Good luck with her....

Exhaust is #1 for hp gain. In opinion i dont think the holley system is good bang for the buck. They claim 20hp over stock with a racing beat header system.
My preference is the rb exhaust system with a mikuni 44phh side draft carb.
That will get you 142hp, thats approx 41hp over stock and the throtlle response is exceptional. Keeping your foot out of it on long drives i used to get 22-25 mpg with that setup. You will need to put on a performance fuel pump with a fuel pressure regulator. You can usually pick up a used 12a header pretty resonable on the forum. Buy the presilencer and racing beat muffler from racing beat or mazdatrix. Their are many choices on fuel pumps, i prefer the carter series.
Thier are used mikunis available for $250-350. Amanifold from rb will cost you $130.00. Afuel pump will run around $80-$90. Figure aused header for around $75-
$95. Regulator is around $35.00. Radcing beat muffler is around $180, the presilencer is around $135.00. Figure in new gaskets for around $35.00
A good Kn filter for the mikuni around $55.00. Thats alittel over $1100.00. then
you could have me install it,lol. rx7doctor

So explain to me the difference in how the carbs work, whats a side draft, bridge, etc? Im new to this so some explanation would help...Also that sounds pretty much what i was thinking as to how to modify it. What kind of seat of the pants difference does all that make?

you could probably do a budget turbo for under 1500, but that doesnt seem like somthing you would want to get into.for being a noob, you r first post was excellent, abnd you searched, and showed that you did...kudos. i say do a header to a few magnaflow mufflers. then a modded nikki from sterling and carl.

turbo on a carb:
th charged air is directed through the carb via a carb hat(or bonnet) the carb needs to be prepped to hold boost, so it doesn leak, and the carb also needs 1 pound of fuel for every pound of boost. you also need the fuel for the carb when your outta boost, well say 3 psi so say Y=fuel. X=boost 3 equals starting fuel pressure. Y=3 +1X

without forced induction, or porting, its hard to get more than about 150 hp at the flywheel.
speaking of flywheels, thats a good way to free up some HPs, but those can be costly

ok, im starting to pick up on some of this...thanks for the help...basically if you want huge power boost is the way to go (obviously, its the same on piston engines). What exactly does sterling do to the nikki carb? (I know Nikki is the type of carb, but is that short for something?)

Sterling's site and FAQ page:
http://www.pbandjracing.com/carb_faq.htm
to get the details of their moded Nikki carbs
from there you can email them directly and get this: they will actually respond to you!
I haven't bought from them (yet) but that doesn't stop them from giving me good feed back - and that is VITAL if you are going DIY any engine mod. Sterling and Carl are regulars on this forum and offer great support for their product...
good luck with the mods and weclome to the RX7
