Question A Few 12A Questions

Hey guys,
I was wondering if you could help me out.....
INFO: I have an 83 12a that i finally finished rebuilding and need to begint the process of putting it back in the car.

1.) How do i static time my engine? Being the dunderhead i am, i forgot to mark where my distributer was? i searched and didnt find any descriptions with enough detail...any info would help, the more detail the better.

2.) Where can i get bolts, etc. for things like my water pump exhaust manifold...you know pretty much all the stuff that bolts on to the block. most of mine are darn rusted and i would feel better replacing them. is a hardware store my only option?

3.) (this isnt really a question, but...) can someone post a few shots of the pullies from different angles? i know putting pullies back on is easy but for some reason its confusing the hell out of me! i blame it on my lack of organization during dissasembly.

Thanks in advance everyone...i will definately appreciate the help. oh, by the way if anyone prefers feel free to email me any information or questions regarding my questions above. ( buschj01@student.ucr.edu ) thanks again.

no ... actually, i don't mind!

i'm doing this from memory right now, so don't sue me if i miss a step ...

1 - turn the motor by hand and line it up with the lead mark (i believe it's the RED one) ...
2 - hold the distributor sorta like you're loading a shotgun, turn it until the 2 notches are lined up. there is one on the gear and one on the shaft. (be careful, because there are also the 2 set screws that hold the gear on, so don't confuse them with the mark like i did my first time.)
3 - just put the dizzy in, and you should be golden!

it has been my experience that if you replace bolts with regular hardware stuff, the will work, but they make you have to use other sizes than the standard 10, 12, 14, 17 stuff. i usually just reuse anything that doesn't break, strip or get rounded - they may not look pretty, but they're up to the task. however, if you must buy them, get stainless if you can afford it (especially for the exhaust).

what problems are you having with the pulley?

hope some of this helps ...

1) not sure about the distributor.

2) Pepboys should have a decent selection of bolts, I also replaced a lot of mine when I put in my 12a street port several months ago. Try to get grade 10.9, the strongest for metric (equal to domestic grade 8).
Be carefull with stainless! yeah it may look nice and not rust...but they are usally weaker (grade ~5) and can brake easier.

3) Yeah I can take some pics for you. The most important would probably be putting the timing mark on the main pully on the right way. I have no airpump, so I'm not sure my pics would be of any help.

Thanks Guys!
Ok after i read the info on static timing i'm not so worried anymore thanks diabolical. FD racer... the problem im having with the pullies is that in my shop manual it seem like the main pulley on the eccentric shaft has more than one sheave (spelling?), but the one i have with the yellow timing mark on it has only one. i know which one the air pump is because it has a different bolt pattern than the others and my ac pulley is still on the compressor... so basically i just want to confirm that i have the others in the right place. thanks for the info!!!
