FD Brakes on FB
Has anybody heard anything about putting FD brakes on a FB? I think it would give you the improved braking performance and the ABS would be very useful.

That's close to impossible.
On my car (1982 with widebody) I have FD calipers, but no ABS. The calipers are larger then stock (obviously...) and won't fit anything smaller than 15" wheels. The discs I have are custom drilled for old-style (4*110) bolt pattern, but I'm not sure what they are (FB,FD,...) as I haven't done the conversion myself.
But what you are talking about is an entire brake system swap; with ABS etc. If you know how ABS works, you'll know there's a lot of electronics. Many parts of electronics in cars are related, so highly doubt you can "simply" swap the ABS system from an FD to another car.

Swapping the ABS would be a major chore.As far as just getting the bigger brakes,might as well just run S4-S4 big brakes.Theyre about the same size and very readily availible in wrecking yards.I run the Selectmaz setup which uses stock 4 pot TII calipers and Selectmaz 12" rotors,a little bigger than stock TII.CP also makes a kit to bolt on stock TII 11" rotors and calipers.

It is possible, but definitely a lot of work. Therefore why not use a more modern 4-channel ABS system from a newer car? It would perform better and the parts being more readily available and cheaper as well. IMHO ABS is not a bad idea for street driving, but the narrow FB tires are the bigger problem though, LOL. I have several extra FD calipers, discs, and master cylinders left over from upgrades, if you are interested.

Well I've got a friend who knows his way around RX-7 brakes and brake electronics. I will work with him on this project. The big brake kits might work but I am not sure how well they will work with the ABS. I will try to get more info as soon as I get the project started. It may be easier to use Turbo II ABS and brakes. There was an article in RXtuner article about it. Other ABS or brakes might be better but I will post as soon as stuff gets started.

The Selectmaz kit was about 1100 after $$ conversion.It is complete with rotors,calipers,pads and bearings.They only had kits for small bearing and 110MM cars at the time,I made it work on my 84 spindles with a little machine work.That was 3 years ago,they should have a new version by now that fits larger bearing 84-85's and has a better lug pattern.
The wheels were special ordered from Japan because of my funky offset and 4 lug requirement.Dont ask how much.............but they are sweet,even if I couldnt get em' in silver.

Yeah I think the kit is around 2,000 au and now the money conversion is not so friendly for us Kit would probably cost around 1750

If anyone is still viewing this forum, I am switching to the Turbo II brakes like it was mentioned earlier. But I am in pursuit of ABS so I will still be working on that part of the project. Does anyone know where I can find a cheap TII ABS pump? Also, is it neccessary to upgrade to a TII pump?

Don't forget, with ABS, you must also have wheel speed sensors, and sensor wheels.....i doubt you could drill the hub, and mount the sensor and the sensor wheel without some extremely jaor mods. Then you have to consider safety, you are afterall, drilling THROUGH the WHEEL HUB.
Just forget the ABS. If you want FD ABS, buy an FD.

SE rears are nearly the same size as TII brakes.Stops and locks up my 245's pretty easily.
Ive never seen any aftermarket rear conversions that were bigger than stock.I talked to Selectmaz and they said both of thier rear kits didnt come close to mathing the SE's diameter and swept area.Someone on Mazspeed had an old rear disc conversion,but it was just to replace drums and wasnt an improvement over the stock discs.....plus he said it sucked!

A guy I work with has an interesting low buget solution for big brakes installed on his car.
Take the stock 1 peice rotor/hub and cut the rotor off the hub on a lathe, remove the studs, reinstall 1/4" longer studs. then get 97 corvette 13" rotors and drill your own bolt pattern, slide the vette rotors over your hubs, cut your bracket and extend it 1/4" to fit on the caliper over the rotor. If you don't have fender clearance then machine some backspacing off your wheels. the last step he didn't do and his 17"s don't rub.
If my SE brakes with ss lines and hawk pads don't make the cut then I will be doing this.
To get the most benifit you could use bigger multipiston calipers with a bigger master cylinder.
