FB Trans Shifter Housing

Hey All

I am trying to figure out if the area that the stick shift goes into on an FB trans is removable by itself? I removed the 4 bolts that bolt to the tail shaft but can't figure out how to separate it. I also tried turning the circular part that the shifter rod goes through to try and turn it out of the transmission but it just spins, it doesn't back out at all.

Here are photos of the section I am trying to remove.

Thanks!

The block inside the shifter housing has a pin. It can be a PITA.

I guess I'm not sure what you mean? I did take the bolt out of the block that holds the stick shift so the block is free to move.

Can you be more specific as to what I need to remove?

looks like ur "block" uses a bolt instead of a pin, as kansas was saying so your good on that aspect. can the block move vertically (based on the picture) so it can slide off the shifter rod? the tube should come out when u pull up on that housing.

I'm not an expert in the FB trans, but I've never seen one that uses a bolt instead of a roll pin. The roll pin goes through the shaft from the side and not the top.

I did find this thread that has a picture and it does show a bolt so I could be wrong about having a roll-pin.

Ok just so we are all talking about the same thing I am trying to remove the whole shifter housing, like I circled in red, not just the little square block the stick shift goes into.

It appears there are tabs where I drew the arrows that don't allow the housing to slide back. It seems like I have to lift up to get over the tabs but I can't lift enough to clear them because the shifter rod is in the way.....????

Anyone experience that? I'm thinking I may have to take the whole rear of the transmission off....????

Yes the shifter tower is doweled to the tail shaft housing. You have to pull the tail shaft housing off the transmission then when the shifter rod is not inside the tube you can lift it up out of the dowel then slide it out of the tail shaft housing. from where you are at it is not that difficult just remove the 8 long bolts that hold the tail shaft housing to the transmission and pull it off then you can do what you need to do.

You can just remove the bolt holding the selector cup to the shaft and slide both off. Yes the housing does have a locating dowel on the extension housing, but you can maneuver the shifter housing around it.

Either way is fine. They usually have a roll pin holding the selector cup to the shaft, which is much more difficult to remove, but luckily you have the uncommon bolt variation which is much easier to remove.
