SA refers to an rx7 from 79-80
an FB refers to an rx7 from 81-85
FC refers to one from 86-91 and FD refers one from 92-00
also look up S1, S2, and S3.

Technically the FC was 86-92 and the FD was 93-95 if you're going about us sales. If you go by Japanese sales it all get's thrown off. SA:78-79 FB:80-84 FC-85-91 and FD: 92-02

In full they were SA22C being the Mazda model designation, but this was changed later to FB for US delivered cars as it was too long to fit on their vehicle identity number plate[vin]. At the change over date there were significant improvements to the RX-7, such as the introduction of the 6p engine in Japan, so elsewhere in the world the FB was called the Series 2, then later the Series 3 but this does not appear on the build information plaque.

Your mostly right, but still incorrect in one point. Going by north american sales, there was no 92 RX-7. FC was 86-91 and FD was 93-95.

The data I have is the FC was also built in 92, when 245 were made. Production of the FD started in 91 when 975 were made. with 6,654 in 92 and 6,801 in 93.

The NA sales figure in 92 according to my source was 6,006 RX-7s.

Further to my earlier post the SA22C sequence was 11 digits, changing to 17digits for the FB sequence

Not certain where you got the SA/FB data from as the Japanese sales figures do not distiguish between the models or finish in 84. In fact according to factory records 33,562 SAs were produced in 85 with the last one in early August. The FC3S, went into production in September 85 with the first official sale on 8 October. It was to be called the RX-8 right up to the last minute when the marketing dept won the argument to keep using the RX-7 designation.

Then it would just be 80-85. I figured the Japanese stopped produscing the SA/FB in 84 and started producing the FC in 85

The reason why it is so confusing is the Japanese usually introduce their model changes in Sept-Oct. Thus, Mazda introduced the 85 model SA/FB in October 84. The problem is some data is model year, other data calender year, other is financial year. Never mind there are also two sets of figures used in the same company, production and sales. Understanding data on the FD3S is very difficult as there were so many short runs which overlapped.

The first production SA built in March 1978, was called a 1979 model! Thus the model ran from 78-85.

The 83 came in four models: S, GS. GS special edition, and GSL. GS was the most common.

The S was very basic, for example minimum audio equipment.
The GL came with a few luxuries which can be checked easily, centre armrest with storage compartment, tinted windscreen, lighting in the cargo area.
The LTD Edition was in silver with sunroof, trimming was in red.
The GSL came with tweed or leather upholstery, with a range of luxury options depending on how good the sales person was.

Quite often the GS had GSL options added, the quickest check is the seating upholstery
