Hello...

It's time for an oil change....I have been a CASTROL fan since I was sixteen... used it in every car or truck I have owned. My motorcycles always get MOTUL.
I have figured on 20/50 for the viscosity, I live in a hot climate.

So, what are the favorite brands among the forum members here? I guess the unique design our rotary engines may benefit from a certain oil's characteristics? IDK, but I would like to hear what all of you folks run in these little engines.

OK you got me.... Nobody's oil control rings are perfect

I'm sure some of the oil seeps through the control rings. But it shouldn't.

 

I've been using Castrol GTX 20w-50 for 10 years now with no issues. I use it year round in Las Vegas summers and winter nights get down a little below freezing. I used it naturally aspirated and now on my turbo setup. I personally don't see any reason to change the brand for me.

 

Haha, of course we live in an imperfect world. The point I was mainly trying to make is for the average person with an OEM setup, there is an omp of one form or another putting oil directly in the combustion chamber.

 

GTX 20/50 in the summer and 10/30 in the winter are what I've used in all my RX-7s ever. Reliable, proven, cheap and available pretty much anywhere.

That and a WIX filter.

 

Castrol GTX 10-30 every 3000mi for 12yrs I have had my SA....

ok....COOL....I will just stick with my old trusty CASTROL then....In my last Chevy, I switched to the 'high milage' variety, (in the green bottle)....says for over 75,000 miles or something..

I have been running the CASRTOL ACTEVO in my Kawasaki ZRX1200R this is my second one of these...;ut over 80,000 miles between the two with zero oiling issues. I know I said I run MOTUL oils in my MOTOs...thats only in my 2-Strokes (I have 4...LOL)

CASTROL ACTEVO is a semi-senthitic....perhaps too modern for our old engines? I know some lubricants are too slippery to work with older applications because they were designed to use the 'oils of the day' ...

WELL, unless any of You have any compelling reasons not to use CASTROL 20/50 (standard model in the white bottle, I guess) ..thats what I'm going to use.

Why?..because I am nuts and the starter sometimes sounds crunchy...but the engine runs smooth!

I am probably one of the few guys here who will say I use Synthetic. Contrary to what others believe, synthetic burns/lubricates perfectly fine and can be had for cheaper than conventional when using rebates. I personally run Either Castrol 0/5w40 or 5w50 or Mobil 1 0w40 or 15w50 depending on weather and on the mileage of the engine and whether it has been rebuilt or not. Brand is dependent upon getting a rebate. All of my Engines run great and I get better fuel economy than the other guys around who use conventionals. Oil is cheap insurance for these expensive engines that are becoming harder and harder to find. Also from what I understand Mazda's oil designated for all rotary use is a Group III oil which is not synthetic by Japanese standards but is by American standards. In fact almost any store bought synthetic will be mostly group III.

The real answer is use whatever oil you prefer. Use at least a 5w30 in weight. A 0wxx oil would be great in super cold temperatures. 0w40/5w40/10w40 would be a great selection for any engine run in temperatures between 0 and 120 F. They are great all weather oils and would be acceptable for some track usage. For a track car, a car only run in higher temperatures or an engine with worn tolerances an xw50 oil should be a great option.

Just for reference, thinner oils flow better in colder temperatures and give better fuel economy at the possible risk of more wear depending upon vehicle usage. The first number is used to specify what the oil viscosity is at low temperatures where as the second number is to specify oil viscosity at high temperatures.

I use Valvoline vr1 race oil 20w50 in all of my rx7s.

I'm surprised, seems like the consensus is Castrol. Other motoring forums usually end up in heated debates over lubrication.

I use a 10w30 up here in Canuck Central...
Even with the interval change it is usually not in the engine as long as the "max recommended mileage" for the oil.
Wix has been my favorite filter although I sometimes pick up a Fram when in a hurry.Again the damn thing is not on the car long enough to clog up..lol!

The Great "Cake" just uses anything handy on sale.I tend to agree with him.

Mobil super $13 for 5 quarts
Quakerstate $14 for 5 quarts
Pennzoil $15.50 for 5 quarts
Valvoline $15.50 for 5 quarts
Castrol $17 for 5 quarts
Mobil 1 $25 for 5 quarts plus $12 Mail in rebate=$13 for 5 quarts
This is why I personally use synthetics. They almost always have a MIR making them cheaper than conventional.

 

Gotta join in: Rotella T 15-40 CJ-4/SM Plus other applications
I've used this and/or Delvac 15-40 for, shall we say decades, and have always purchased bulk.
Checking what I have in the garage, the oils are listed CJ/SM diesel/gas applications, but from what I see
when the product(s) viewed today, seems as only diesel application is listed.
Guess I had better check the shelves as I only have 6 qts available.
