fan runs constantly

Crank up the engine, and the fan just runs. Rev the engine and the fan keeps pace. I can turn the fan reasonably freely when it's off though. If I give it a good wheel-of-fortune turn it moves about a quarter rotation. Any thoughts? clutch, thermostat, etc?

It keeps cool, but the fan doesn't need to be turning 4000 rpms down the interstate... Also doesn't need to be running right when she starts up on a cold day...

Sounds like your fan clutch is not releasing when it should, it should only engage for a minute or two after a cold start and then again if the engine is not getting enough air flow, like when you're sitting in traffic.

Easiest fix is source a used fan clutch, probably easy to find here on the forum.

Just noticed you're in Atlanta, so I might be able to hook you up with one for free, after the OGTA discount.

Took some poking around to see what OGTA meant. Didn't know there was a group around here. When/where y'all meet?

1st Tuesday of the month, at the Taco Mac near the Georgia Mall in Buford. Here's the thread:

https://www.rx7club.com/se-rx-7-foru...eeting-675955/

If you can make it to the March 1st meeting let me know and I'll bring along a fan clutch.

What year and model do you have?

Also, it's normal for the fan clutch to engage on a cold start for a minute or two, but once it warms up it should switch to free wheeling mode and only engage on a hot day when you're not getting air flow through the radiator, like at a stop light or in stop and go traffic.

When it's free wheeling it will still look like it's spinning but you should be able to feather the fan to a stop using a house broom or other safe method (hands and fingers not recommended).

Tried the broom. Straw went everywhere. I don't really have an opportunity to try it on a known functional fan though, so I might just not know what I'm doing. I'll certainly appreciate help diagnosing it and the clutch if that's what's up.

See y'all on March 1!
