extreme spark from coils???

I was drifting a dirt road last night and now my trailing coil is arching back to itself, from the two side posts to where the plug wire goes in, i swapped the coil, and the plug wires and still have the same problem, i want to go to firebird on friday but need to fix this first, any ideas???????????

try cleaning all the contacts. then if that doesnt do the trick (would be short term only) replace the coils (both of them) with brand new ones. if that doesnt work then you've got bigger problems.

(also, putt apart your dizzy and clean the rotor and points and give then a light (very light) sand. could be restricting and we all know the electricity takes the path of least resistance)

Could be a grounding issue. If the spark doesn't have good grounding from the engine, then it will look for an easier route to take... This is usually caused by a cracked high tension cable or boot, but it sounds like you've already changed this. Good luck...

Arcing is usually a sign of a cracked post/coil tower or a bad boot on the plug wire. Swap the wires between the coils. If it still arcs, replace the coil, if it moves to the other coil, replace the wire.

Check and see if the plug wire boots are fitting tight on the coils. Sometimes they will tend to work themselves off. Make sure the tops of the coil towers are clean and not conducting an electrical charge across them. Brake cleaner works good for this, then apply dielectric grease as mentioned earlier on the coil tower contacts and inside the boot on the plug wire. Then check for any frayed ignition wires and that the connections on the top of the coils are tight.
