Dude I'm new to rotaries. The more help and input I can get, the better.

yeah in the stock setup the cat does a lot of the muffling.

Indeed. I ran a stock muffler and exhaust manifold without cats for a while. Sounded retarded. I also ran an RB header and presilencer with a stock muffler. That also sounded retarded, and was even louder.

I also rode in a mostly stock FB with the exhaust after the cats removed. It was loud, but not as loud as you'd think. Didn't really sound that bad, either.

maybe we should focus on putting something in the spot currently occupied by the likely defunct glass pack, cat or something, new cat from Muffler was about $100.

i have the full racing beat street port system on my car and i love the way it sounds but now after driving my cousins car the other day without the presilencers im really thinking about ditching the silencers and going straight to the racing beat universal muffler. Our cars have the same motors and carbs but his felt sooo much quicker!!! like night and day

Is this the universal muffler I see referenced?
What makes it different than any other similar muffler? Is it somehow "special" for rotaries?
All I can say is I "think" we have an aftermarket header (not seeing what stock looks like), a glass pack and a stock muffler and it sounds really horrible. I'd prefer a good but not too loud sound, but quiet is just fine, the "horrible deranged snowmobile" sound we currently have is pretty sad.

Yes, that's the one. It's available in 2.5" and 3". What makes it special is that it's phenomenally well-built for the price. Seriously, if you look at them in person, Magnaflow or Borla or other name brands can't come close to competing on build quality at that price point. And since Racing Beat packed it, you can be sure it'll last forever on a rotary. More relevant to the topic at hand is that as far as I've found, they're the quietest straight-through universal muffler that will fit in the stock muffler location in an FB.

Man, now I sound like an RB fanboy. But that's just how impressed I was by their universal mufflers. Their universal presilencers are of similarly high quality.

I'm thinking now of taking out the defunct glass pack and putting this in it's place- RB presilencer. Then, if that doesn't do it, going to an RB muffler. I think the issue lies with the non-functional glasspak that probably grenainded itself in short order.

You may have just taught me something. So the RB universal is a true straight through 3" muffler, UNLIKE their kit muffler which has all kinds of baffles and **** in it?

For $400.00 I was able to pick up a used RB SP full exhaust system (header, center
section and muffler) for my SA 12A. Hit it with some high temp BBQ paint for the
center section and bolted it right up and it sounds great and fits well. Just
something to think about.

The bolt-on mufflers DO NOT have baffles. I know this for a fact as I've looked straight through one myself. It was the '81-82 version, and it had had the pipes hacked off so it could be installed in Jeff20B's REPU. So we could look directly into it, and I can assure you that it was, in fact, a straight-through design.
