Exhaust smell?

This is for the guys with headers, performance carbs and straight exhaust. How bad does you exhaust fumes smell? Doe it stick to your clothes? I run a straight exhaust and its pretty bad. I have been playing with my dells idle mixture to try and rid of some of the fumes but to no success. I'm using the stock RB jettings except for my main fuel which is a 240(I lost my 230's).

Thanks, Ed

Mine used to seriously wreak untill I switched to direct fire. That extra leading spark per rotor face along with the generally higher spark energy helped to burn the AF mixture more completely. There are also many other benefits to direct fire that I won't get into here. Now I don't fear walking behind my rotaries when they're running.

Yup, they stink. Of course, so does any other car without exhaust after treatment.

Stink?!?!? Are you guys crazy?!?! That is the smell of beauty, my friends. I often use it as a cologne. So what if the girls don't dig it? Atleast you know what's what, and you immediately get props from other First gen. guys. Heh.

Then your dellorto is really rich. I tried a dellorto and a stock carb, both with DLIDFIS, and the stock carb didn't smell rich. Infact, with the stock carb, the smell is rather pleasant. Maybe it's the slight influence of the OMP's oil input into the engine and the more stoich AF mixture of the stock carb?

I don't think the air pump would do anything without a cat.

I think I may have found why fumes are so bad at idle. Could it be because I have all 6ports open all the time vs to having only 4 at idle? What carb are you using brian?

Thanks, Ed

13BTOY, RB really liked the dellorto on 6 port engines, and typically got better results than on 4 port engines. I think they recommended that the 5th and 6th ports remain functional with a dellorto.

The idle circuit is probably way too small for all 6 ports to be open at idle. Since all 6 are flowing, maybe they're sucking too much vacuum, thus pulling more gas from the carb since the butterflies are closed? That's just a guess though.

I had an '83 with a bonez high flow cat and an otherwise stock exhaust, stock ignition, air pump and rats nest. In terms of smell, it was nearly as bad as my current '85 S that has a full racing beat "streetport" exhaust, no rats nest or air pump, and an MSD direct-fire ignition -- which really isn't that bad. Once it warms up it doesn't smell bad at all (at idle of course )

Actually, I think the direct fire ignition makes all the difference here.

I was actually contemplating on whether or not to put the 6port mechanicals back in and hook up the airpump for its actuation. Do you guys think its worth the effort? I love the way the car runs with all 6ports open but then again I never drove the car with it functioning. maybe I can kill 2 birds with 1 stone.

Thanks, Ed
