exhaust porting

I got my yummy new rotor housings in about five days ago, and I was looking at the exhaust ports, which are smaller than I'd thought they'd be. I have been planning on going with a large street port from the get-go. My only question is that there appears to be a kind of welded insert right after the smoothed machined surface on the inside of the housing, does this need to be removed/altered when porting.

dunca.

I THINK you mean your exhaust sleeve. They can be removed but it is essential that you do it in a way that will not damage the roll pins so that you can reuse them. Unless you plan on welding the EGR holes in the sleeves shut and plugging the holes in the aluminum housing, it is not worth taking out. You are actually better off leaving it in while porting because it can be used as a guide for porting for the street. I recommend getting a streetport exhaust template from somewhere to give you an idea of where to port. Just port the housing surface according to the template and blend it so that it is flush with the exhaust sleeve insert. You mentioned that the housings are new. You should port your old housings for practice. You also mentioned that you are from around Pittsburgh, If you need any parts for anything or help with anything let me know, I am from the South Hills area.

Here are some pictures of the housings that I am doing for the 1991 streetport engine that I am building now.

I should mention that the ports were opened a bit too far downward but I got them from a friend who got these housings from a shortblock that he bought and they were free and are in spec so I will live with them.

Thanks for the reply. I'm a little ways off from diving completly into the build but its nice to have someone local to reference with. I'll definitly be in touch when I get the cash to get my **** together.

Where in the south hills?

I'm almost in Washington County, but still in Allegheny.
