exhaust overheat warning light came on while racing, should I worry about it?

I have a racingbeat streetport header setup with a N1 muffler on the back.

I got a chance to race it at brainerd raceway (will have pics soon)

as i got better at handleing the i started pushing it harder.

after about 6 really hard laps(120mph strait, some drifting, and never droping lower than 5500 for about 12 minutes.)

I opened the hood and the headers were not even glowing, which I have heard is the hottest it gets.

should I worry about this?

Get yourself an EGT to find out for sure.

that happened to me last sunday...

I did 10 laps...and the light came on...I boiled the brake fluid also.

My carb is jetted and I am getting plenty of gas. I'll experiment again soon. If this (light coming on) persist I'll consider it normal.

What's it connected to anyways?? As far as I can tell, nothing. It isn't plugged into my exhaust anywhere, that's for sure. So how can it tell whether my EGT is too high?

BTW, mine comes on all the time, often when I first start the car cold lol. I just ignore it.

i had lots and lots of poping in the exhaust, the same kind of poping I get when it spits fire, i dont think im running rich because my nikki has stock jetting, it might be running lean, could that cause it.

You don't have the cat on right? You shouldn't when you race, thats bad for them. If you don't have a cat, the overheat light shouldn't be on and the exhuast is not as hot really.

im not 100% sure, but the sensor for exhaust over heat is on the floor of the passenger side. i believe it was there to let you know the exhaust was really hot, too hot for it to be uncomfortable to the pessemger.

do you still have them heat shields under the car above the exhaust?

The sensor was there to keep you from impending melting of the cats. Continueing to drive it hard and they would melt: is what the sensor is there for. Also it tells you if your car is running wrong by sending too much raw fuel out the exhuast as that will make them much hotter then they should be.

i no longer have heat sheild, they were too rusted anyways when I took them out. I think i am running lean, if I use stock plugs, they turn white.

couldnt that over heat the exhaust.

That's is correct, running LEAN makes that light come on, b/c if you run lean = more air = mixture burns better = mixture burns hotter = exhaust overheats = engine will blow if you keep doing it

I don't know man... I'm running RB Dell'orto with proper jetting and tuning, good fuel pump, etc. That light comes on all the damn time, in the hot weather of the summer.

It also comes on sometimes, as soon as I start the car. There is no way the exhaust is running excessively hot 1 second after I start the car cold.

I'm pretty sure my mixtures are just fine. I think the light is just fucked up. I'm not worried about it.

I have to say now, that I run a bridgeport with a weber. I messed with the jetting and found I was running too rich with the ones I had, and went leaner and made much more power. I run premix and no OMP ofcourse then. The plugs are allways clean and pretty white in color. Which I assume is in part that I'm using 2cycle oil and running in the correct fuel range.

If I look closely to the ceramic portion of the plug, its usually lightly brown.

Bottom line is if the plugs are fairly white, doesn't mean your running excessively lean nessessarily. If it were, you would be getting very good milage and poor power response.

With that said, take out the speedo cluster and remove the light for the overheat sensor.

you are running tooooooo lean man. you need a better feul pump! or either too much air coming in! a bigger exhaust out may be needed, but if your rotors are getting hot, you probably just need to chill on that engine. also, try running av gas (assuming you are running blue gas). 87-93 is fine on a 12a. blue gas is nice, but dont fry those rotors! you must never forget that a 12a is a heavyweight with a glass jaw!

The wire is braided and comes through the floor just behind the front seats. You can just cut it off.

ok, my exhaust smells very much like a snowmobile, what does this mean? and if im running to rich how can i change the air to fuel mixture to correct it. there are quite a bit of pops in the exhaust when i let off the gas and im still in gear and stuff.

ok, heres the deal, I have a I have road race headers and SP center section, and a N1 muffler on the back, I have a carter pump and holley regulator, i also have a edelbrock open foam aircleaner.

If I use stock plugs (8s) they turn white but dont blister, I just installed 3rd gen trailling plugs all around(9s) and they are always black(too cold)

I dont think I am running dangerously lean, just allittle lean,

I want to rejet my nikki, anyone have jet sizes for that would work well with my setup.

it would be easier to get rid of that stock nikki and get a holley intake or weber intake or some other intake.. I mean, since you went to the trouble to put on $1000 worth of exhuast components and a carter pump and regulator. That stock carb is really holding you back.

Yeh, the stock carb is holding me way back, I will be rebuilding my engine this winter to port it, i planned on getting a 48 weber from atkins rotary. they jet it for your application,

could I run a streetport jetted 48 weber on my stock port temporarily until I port it over the winter.

Absolutely!!! Its really easy to install! When you go to rebuilt your engine later, have threaded plugs installed in the rotor housing coolant holes that go to the intake so when you take the intake off from time to time, you never have to worry about coolant spilling out! I'm glad I went out and bought a tap and some plugs for that when I did it.

The jetting doesn't have to be right on for you to have a benefit over that damn Nikki! Just tell them what you are building and have them guessitmate what jets will work best and then get some larger and smaller to expirment with later.
