Exhaust musik
I just put a new header on my first gen and eliminated the cat that was on there... whoever owned this thing before me had 2.5" pipe ran to a FLOWMASTER muffler. It sounds like crap! what mufflers would give me a good sound? rather than something that sounds like a mustang is throwing up!
if at all possible pics would be nice so i know what to look for... thanks for any help!

Flowmasters are known to not do well on a rotary. You will need to install some sort of pre-silencer where the cat was. One of the best choices is a Borla XR or XS series. They are pricey though. Another option is a Magnaflow oval, (19X4X9" should fit in the space left from the cat). I have a Magnaflow 4" round in place of the pre-silencer and it doesn't do much at all, but then I'm running a full 3"exhaust, header back and another Magnaflow at the end. I get noise complaints when it's idling. Apparently it rattles the neighbors windows. My comment was to buy better quality windows. That didn't go over well, lol.

I would suggest the Magnaflow 5x8 oval in a 18" body as a presilencer, then another identical muffler as the main muffler behind the axle. Yes that length will fit without problems, I did it. My current system is on the loud side, but at idle its not bad. Its a true dual 2" system with a single 5x8x18 magnaflow center/offset muffler behind the axle on each pipe. I would suggest going with a center/offset over center/center because it will muffle better. The sound at idle is very different from what anyone has really heard before outside of the rotary community. Its very unique because of the true dual setup, which is two pipes, one off each rotor, not collected at all. This type of system has been proven to make more power than most on a stock ported engine, but on a streetported engine the results are not very good. But mine is stock, and this is basically designed from the RB 2nd gen dual system. It is quite loud while accelerating, but surprisingly quiet at idle or constant cruise below 40mph. I don't have any presilencers, just the two magnaflows at the back.

i have a 3" system. all mandrel bends with one hotdog style muffler just before the axle then a rotaflow muffler with a 3" dump tip. best sounding exhaust i've heard on a rotor. i dont know what you guys call the hotdog but it's casing is about 1"wider than the rest of the piping with very few baffles. basically looks like a very long cat.
