Exhaust help - help a newbie please!

Hi all,
Got an 81 RX-7 so couple of months ago, and everyhting's been good with it until recently. We had to have the catylitic converter replaced when we got the car, and the tech took off the pre-converter saying we didn't need it. Just noticed the other day that the exhaust pipe is getting red-hot when warming up. We think the guy didn't know what he was talking about. We've been trying to find information on the subject, but have been having a hard time. Can anyone out there give us info on the exhaust system, or where we can find the info? Also, do you know of any 1st gen machanics in the Washington, DC area? We've decided that we need to take it to someone that knows these cars. Thanks for your help in advance.

should have tried a search first the glowing exhaust seems to be a common symptom of improper fuel/air mix
