Exhaust/Header questions.
Hey everyone. First off I'd like to ask everyone to bear with me on this, I'm a noob to Rx7s however I have been doing constant research.
I currently have an 85 Gs with a 12a and would love to get a little more power out of her. I've considered doing a turbo/SC set up with a blow through carb but I havent really been able to find any indepth threads via search about the pro's and cons.
I've heard (and read on RacingBeat) that one can get gains of around 40-60Hp with a complete exhaust, and a better carb and fuel pump, however I'd like to know if these numbers are tried and true?
My car NEEDS a new exhaust, is never winter driven and honestly its not worth my money to get a factory exhaust if I can pay a bit more and get a performance set up.
so my question is, what Exhaust would you recommend for this car? I'm thinking of doing a full set up head>cat Delete (not required for cars under 87 in ontario)>Tubular Resonator>RB Muffler?
I'm in to at least $700 before shipping guarenteed i believe but if its going to last its worth it.
Also, if I strip down the factory Nikki carb can I get more power out of the car? Or am I better off going with a holly/Webber in the future? I'm looking for something I can daily drive in good weather, and have fun on a track. Im thinking going manual secondaries upgrading the fuel pump and removing all the emissions Equipment. Also a K&N air filter.
Thanks in advance,
Tyler.
P.s. are there any online companies that sell decent rims for 4x110?

Hi Tyler
Going turbo or supercharger can be a very big and expensive project. You will want to consider whether or not you really need that much power. You can get great improvements by upgrading the exhaust (which should be your first step), and the Racing Beat system is a good way to go. There isn't much else out there that will stand up to the high exhaust temperatures of a rotary.
As far as carbs go, you can add simplicity to the stock carb by stripping it, but there won't be any power gains associated with it. However, a properly modified Nikki carb can provide all kinds of power. I would suggest that you visit www.sterlingmetalworks.com and check out the Sterling carbs. I've been running one for years, and the performance is unbeatable. This is also the most reasonable choice in terms of cost, because you can utilize the stock intake manifold. Check out my thread in the Non-Tech section titled "race results". There is a video from my last race, which should give you some idea as to the power and performance of the Sterling carbs, and maybe give you some ideas for future suspension upgrades.
There are also some RX7 guys living in Ontario that are running Sterling carbs, so it might be possible to hook up with one of them for a test drive. One that comes to mind is (user name) Orion84GSL. Maybe send him a PM and see what you can work out.
Feel free to hit me up if you have any questions...

The nice thing about the RB setup is that it lasts pretty much forever. I would try to pick up a used one instead. It will work just as well and save a ton of money. The system is quite heavy, so you can imagine shipping+duty to Canada will be $$$ if you bought new from RB.
The new system may start off pretty, but it doesn't take long for the rotary exhaust temperatures to causing bluing of the header (sometimes after 1 or 2 drives). Within a year or so, the chrome on the header may start to burn off. So, what I am saying is that a 'new' system will look 'used' in no time..so might as well save some bucks and start off with a used one.

well if your pricing out stock exhaust you going to spend probably triple what you would for a complete system from racing beat. I remeber pricing out A part of the stocks delicate exhaust and it was 1300 dollars alone thats more than the RB system alone.
I've done what youve describe and at least 40hp gained, "its a new beast." the sound alone makes it worth it.....

Awesome, For now I'm going to "bandaid" the exhaust to get it thru a safety and then a full exhaust will come this winter while she's in the garage getting prettied up. I was talking to the guys at Napa today and $1500 was the best they had so RB it is. I may try to find a used system on here .
I've thought thru the Turbo/SC Idea and if I can get say 150Hp with out forced induction I'll be happy. But first things first getting it legal, and on the road!
Thanks for the advice guys! keep it coming.

If you go Racing Beat, be sure to get the long-primary "streetport" system. It's much better.
You'll find lots of opinions on carb choices. I like Webers personally. A Sterling Nikki would probably work well for you as well.
As for wheels, if you want to buy new, your choices are pretty limited. You've got your Panasport knockoffs (Rota RB and Konig Rewind), and that's about it as far as I know.

Tyler check out the mods in my signature. With these mods I'm putting down 134 hp to the rear wheels, figure in drive train losses and the estimated hp at the flywheel is easily 150+ hp. Thats at least 45 hp over stock. So yeah the adds don't lie.
BTW those dyno numbers were with the older Rotary Engineering exhaust I had on there. The RB SP setup I have now seems to be even better.
Heres the dyno sheet for ya:

Found out the other day my Muffler is more rust the metal (sucks) Also, the exhaust has seperated at the front before the first cat... I'm going to take a picture of it in a second and I'll link the image here. I'm no pro and tried to patch it so excuse if it looks like crap lol.
Picture ( apparently its AFTER the first cat)
The black you see is an Epoxy type Exhaust tape, its solid and I'm pretty sure its solid now, It should last and clear a safety.
