Excessive fireballs out the exhaust and hesitation/stumbling...

Finally got the RX-7 running, flip the switches, hit the start button, and VROOM! she starts up

I removed the OMP, and I'm running pre-mix, and i think i added a bit too much 2-cycle oil, as its smokin a bit, so tell me if thats the problem.

Anyways, I'm getting... excessive.... fireballs out the exhaust, POP-BAM! every so often, lol. And I'm getting a lot of stumbling/hesitation. What should I check to find and solve this problem?

Just sounds like you're running rich. Take it out for a spin to clean it out......and see if it persists.....than lean out your fuel a bit.

Mix screw on the carb. This is when an air/fuel gauge is nice...

N/A, not likely. Of course if it feels weak, misfires alot, and runs a bit jerky, your way too lean.

The mixture screw's only for adjusting the idle mixture so it will in no way cause your engine to blow. To adjust it, turn it clockwise (lean) until the engine starts hunting, then back out till it's smooth and maybe another 1/4 turn. You'll know it's too lean if there's a lot of popping or missing on decel.

The backfiring could also be caused by having the timing too retarded or maybe even an exhaust leak.

If it hesitates when intitially opening the throttle it's probably a faulty accelerator pump.

Mine shoots flames every time I let off the gas, and then consequently, every time I get back on it. It's always fun driving through ISU campus, and seeing everybody **** themselves because it sounds like a 12 guage just went off.

And fireballs arent bad as long as they dont hurt performance... and this is hurting performance

Im amazed no one has suggested that one of your coils is bad. Mine did exactly what yours is doing and I had a bad coil. Check those while your at it.

What other symptoms did you notice? On my car the secondaries come on late and when I release the accelerator the engine will continue to rev. Like there is unspend fuel in the carb/engine. All this went away for about a week when I hollowed out my cat. The car ran great - for about a week. Now it's acting up again.

I did notice one of the coils metered a little low. How did you confirm the coil to be bad?
