everyone with a TII in 1st gen..
I am trying to decide to use he ecm that came with my jspec or go stand alone.
Chime in with your setup and what you would do different if you did the swap again.

Ive run both the S4 and S5 ECU/controls in my setup.Id prefer a standalone simply for the tuneability and simplicty, but in CA I have to smog it.I kinda dont mind though since it keeps me limited to my current 300hp mark, which keeps things from breaking too often.I definatly prefer the S5 setup over the S4.A real check engine light is nice and the S5 system is just smoother running.
You have to be very careful with your fuel delivery when you push any of the stock ECUs past about 10psi.Use a good fuel pump, and the proper sized injectors, and a good boost controller, and dont mess with the timing and dont trust a S4 turbo to not overboost and dont trust the stock IC to work well,and..............well you get it.
A standalone takes care of most of this, with the only caveat being that it requires full tuning on a dyno,by a pro.
FWIW,my current 2 year old setup runs great, smogs and is still plenty quick.
Fresh streetport 13BT S5
TO4B S5 hybrid at 14psi
Spearco FMIC,60MM piping
Full 3" mandrel exhaust,Bonez cat
800cc secondaries
light steel flywheel
MSD 6
Stock timing,stock S5 ECU,all emissions working.

Stand alone is the way to go. I say, go all the way the first time and do it right. You will spend less money in the long run. I got a decent turbo and intercooler but now i want to go bigger with both. Im using a T04B .60 / .96 a/r. I will soon be uppgrading to a T60-1 and a 24x12x3 intecooler. I will be adding water injection also to avoid detonation and allow me to run more boost and timing advance. Currently i run 13.5 psi and make around 311 rwhp. With the T60-1 , intercooler, and 18 psi i should have 400 RWHP. You have to decide if you want to go all out or use the stock setup.

If you know you cant control yourself in the HP game and your willing to live with having to make big upgrades to the rest of the car, then just go standalone now and save the trouble.A standaone with a healthy engine and turbo makes for 400HP and up,which pretty much dictates some major chassis mods. The stock trans, rearend, brakes and suspension are going to need some $$ thrown at them if your goals are that high.
If your planning on building a fast streetcar that also doubles as practical transportation (like me), then dont count the factory computor out.275-300 crank HP is pretty quick in a light 1st gen and the factory ECU makes for a ready to run, easy setup.Im very happy with my setup and Ive yet to break any of my drivetrain.Plus smooth operation and 20MPG highway is nice.

if you think 300 crank is quick in a 1st gen what do you think about 446 rwhp? nniiiiiiiiicccceee
