I will have to vot efor the 2.3turbo ford. They are built like a brick **** house. Cheap as heck and parts are available at any junkyard to get them running.
Mine has a few things done (all cheap things) and it is putting out around 340 or so at the wheels (working on more) and it will do this for next to ever without wearing out. And can be made to make big numbers pretty cheaply.
I'm not really sure what mine gets as far as mileage goes, most the time I am in it, I am in it lol But when cruising down the hway the engine isn't even trying.

The fit into an rx pretty well, and the ford t5 5-speed hits the shifter hole like is was made for the car.

Over all I love my litte rx, I have little money in it and it is great to see the look on vette/camaro/mustang owners faces when they are trying to figure out what the hell just happened

That is correct, backwards. The only one that could be used in a swap would be the S2000 engine.

I have a legacy GT (Subaru) thats my daily driver, great car, love the AWD but low on power, poor gas milage for the performance, and just kinda big. So I just want something small, light, and economical, yes and I want it to be quick. I looking for around having no less than 170hp and hopfully will not wiegh over 2300-2400lbs.
CA18DET fits the bill perfectly. 170 hp stock, and I've heard of S13's getting 28-30 mpg with conservative driving... and you can still rev to 8k

The suggestion of a b-series Honda engine is a great one. My GSR gets 30mpg on the highway with gearing so short that it's running at about 4700 rpm at 80mph. In a nice, light, standard geared Rx-7 you'd be getting 35 on the highway. The power band of the v-tech b-series is also very similar to a rotary, it even has an 8000 rpm redline. You'd hardly notice that the engine isn't a rotary.

It might also be cool to put in a 2.2 or 2.5 L boxer engine from a Subaru. They make great torque and the fuel mileage is pretty decent.

I suggest a hampster in a wheel running after some food dangled infront of it, you'll get killer mileage.

Too bad it rotates backwards from other engines. He could only go for the S2000 engine since it rotates the standard direction.

The S2000 engine has a power output similar to a rotary, doesn't it? In that case, why bother? Just get a Miata if you're so into that engine.

If you really want some good gas mileage, why not go with a diesel? Our cars already have a reputation for being loud, and smelling like ***. Why not go all the way? If you went with a motor from an older Jetta, Rabbit, or Beetle, you'd be set on gas mileage, you'd have all the torque in the world, and still some decent top end as well. I by no means know these motors, so please, no questions on details. I just know they live forever, are easy to work on, and get great mileage.

Oh yeah, that's right, you'd need to get an engine from a newer Civic or RSX.

Well, where I'm from I have NEVER seen a 2.3L ford engine (the turbo version). Seen many of the NA engines, but no turbo ones.

I think the diesel is a great idea. They have tramendously great gas mileage. The only thing that gets more are the new hybrid cars. They can also make some pretty nice power. Well, the V8 ford and chevy diesels and the I6 of dodge have massive aftermarket. A modded powerstroke is nothing to mess with, even with a 3rd gen. I don't know if there is any aftermarket for the VW TDI, but I would suspect that it has the same kind of ability.
