Est. value of yellow 8/78 4 speed SA

I've found an RX-7 locally that's in near new condition. It's been restored and is absolutely beautiful. $6k was spent on the restoration. It appears the only non stock item is the later model RX-7 wheels, dual exhaust and cd player. Yellow with light brown interior. Scratch on dr side fender and small dent in roof. No runroof, driver side only rear view mirror and hood prop on right side. Asking price is $8k and don't tell me the price is outragous, because I already know that. What's this car worth? $3-4k?
Thanks,
~Jason

p.s. not sure of the actual miles, but the odometer reads 53k

I have no real idea what they are worth, and I asked this same question to the sa22c list a few weeks ago,and had most people tell me it wasn't worth much more than $500.Now granted the car I was looking at(and bought) had not been run in about 5 years, and I didn't even attempt to try starting it,but it is a one owner 5/78 build date Spark yellow GS.I paid $2000 for it with boxes of spare parts, and about 4 three ring binders full of paperwork even down to a small notebook which included every gas fill up from 1978 til 2000 when the car was parked for good.

I would say that the asking price of the car you are looking at is ridiculous, and there is no way you should pay even close to that amount especially for a 4 speed which means it is an S model.I think I probably stole my car at the price, for the area I live in(Massachusetts isn't know for lots of 1st gens),but others have said I over paid for it.I would think $2-3K isn't a bad price, but then again it is all in what you think it is worth to you.I wouldn't pay that much for a car that has had rust or rott repaired,or needs it in the future, but if the car is solid it may be worth it.

Again I may be a bad person to be answering this because I paid a premium(to some people) for a car that isn't that collectible(that is debatable as well),but I think it was worth it,and I always think get the best example you can afford, and it will be worth it in the long run with the lack of problems, and other issues. To me getting a car at $200-$300 isn't worth it if it needs major rott or body repairs.Mechanical work is pretty easy for me,but I hate body work.Good luck, and post some pics if you can.

Mazdax605 You got a Great Price, as that is a very very early car.

Jason, an 8/78 car is early but not as hard to find. I have 3 in my yard right now. 8K is very high, If it was a full on Resto with everything looking show perfect, then 8k would not be so bad, But I would not buy one at that. I would say 3k - 5k would be tops. But would need pics to really say.

Thanks Hades,I thought I got a good deal, but most on the sa22c list think I overpaid, but I think they don't realize how early of a car it is,and the fact that it is a early east coast car which showed up later than the west coast cars.If you look at the 1st gens for sale section on this site there is a pic of my car on the first page now in the thread that I think reads looking for a first gen(new england). It is about half way down the thread.I just recently got a jack under the car,and the chassis is in mint shape. The only issues it has are a few dings and scratches, a small dent near the pass door handle, the exhaust is in tough shape, the old fuel in the tank, and a broken drivers sdie outer door handle.I plan on parting out my 83 Limited edition, and using the racing beat exhaust from that, and any other part I need that is compatible form the 83 to the 79.I think I will sell the rest of the parts from my LE if anyone is interested.

My LE is rotted really bad,and plus it isn't even the factory color anymore. It does have the LE wheels still though, and the interior aside from the seats is in great shape. It even still has the LE radio(actually I have 2 of them). If anyone wants the shell when I am done they are welcome to it as well.It is in rough shape though, that is why I needed to get a new car.

I have 2 sets, and I may sell one set,but they need to be refinished. They are straight, and true, but there is some surface rust on the outer lips, and they are dirty with brake dust that I couldn't get off from the day I got it back in 1998.

If that was aimed at me I am sorry I never intended to do that.Lets get back on topic.

I think you should offer around $2500 for the car,but then again I have not seen it,so that is just a guess as to what it is worth.Does the car have documentation? Is is the S model that I think it is?I really have no idea why the owner would ask so much for the car.It isn't worth what he wants for it even though he has more than likely put that amount or more(as you said)into the restoration. You never get back the money you spend restoring a car,and if your lucky you might get half of it back, but that is highly unlikely.Good luck, and post some pics if you can.ANd again I am sorry for the derailment.

No problem.
It's being sold by a broker who deals in Mercedes, Land Rover, Porsche, Ferarri...all sorts of high end/exotic cars. It's nuts. I'd love to have the car, but what a stupid price!! The owner has died, so his wife consigned it to this place. I wish I could work directly with the woman and make her an offer.

That is too bad.It will never sell at that price, and they will be sitting on it for a while.I think you should go in with an offer like some have suggested, and let them sit on it for a little bit,and then they will realize it may be the only way they can unload it.Good luck, and keep us posted.

I paid $4K via ebay for my 80 GS WITH sunroof (wouldn't own an RX without it, personally) and 63K miles, 2nd owner. It was really worth $3500, but I was happy to pay the premium, because it was _exactly_ what I wanted (!). While the sparks yellow 78's are rare, the "S" is probably the least desirable (your personal taste not withstanding) RX of the 1st Gens. The 4-speed is a loser, no nice trim (center console, body mouldings, intermittent wipers, hatch release, etc). Do you REALLY want a car without all this stuff?? OK, you can swap in most pieces (except roof), but whats the point? get the car you want in the first place - and they are STILL out there! I had to get mine from So. Cal - and I live in Alaska
This is moot in this case since the dealership is clearly brain-dead as to the value of the car - though the price would be driven by what the owner wants to some extent. This is a $2500 car, IMHO.
Keep looking and good luck.

$7 K in restoration? For that much there has to be some euphoric pleasure gainined by restoring an old car. I just don't get it!

The seller just needs one person who thinks that car is worth over $7000.

Anyone remember the VW Beetle Anniversery Champaign Edition?? Like who cares now!!

i paid 1200 for my 4/78 with 92K. he was the 2nd owner and interior needed new rear carpeting. Absolutely no dent, scratch, blemish on the exterior. A/C didnt work, but that is common with cars that old.
