I've had that happen. It is usually a worn out ignition switch, I would check to see how much a new one is or just grab a used one. You could take a look for yourself easily enough.
Just take the cover off of the steering collum(?) and insert the key and turn it. You should be able to tell.

engine won't turn off.

I've replaced the ignition wiring and in the process checked the mechanical part of it and it seemed OK. I'm baffled.

A chick that works on cars! Mmmmm

I'll help you with that... Over dinner... Umm... or something...

Umm ahem...

Yeah.. Perhaps the switch is damaged internally. I have several switches from other cars that do that... Either they stay cranking the engine after you release the key, or they kill the ignition after you're done cranking, or they exhibit the same problem you're having...

Incidentally, I saved them, cut up the harness and installed toggle switches... Now I use them at impound car auctions at the rare times I go and bid on something...

Anywhozer, you might wanna get a hold of a wiring diagram and a multimeter...
