fuel pump and other stuff

i just bought a carter 7 lb fuel pump. i was wondering if i could just mount it in the engine bay. i dont see why i couldnt because older cars used to have them right on the engine. but im just checking. also there is a white plastic thing that the output of the old fuel pump goes into, then a hose comes out and connects to the metal gas line to the carb. is that some kind of regulator and can i take it out and run a straight line to the fuel pump and then to my new holley regulator? then there is another white thing that is mounted pretty close to where the spare tire outline is. it has a hose from the fuel return line and then its output goes to the tank. what is that thing and can i remove it. and one last thing haha...im putting in a different gas tank that i bought new for my other 7 a few years ago, just because i know its good and the one on the one im fixing up could be bad, so im not taking any chances. but the newer gas tank has only 3 places for lines to attatch, but the new one has four, one is plastic and is farther back from the other mettal outputs. the newer tank has a circle in the same place as the plastic but it is part of the tank and hasnt been cut out or anything. so i dont know what to do about this. and i also need to know where i can buy a fuel sensor unit, the thing that plugs into the wire that runs to the fuel gauge,
any help would be a great help. thanks everybody.

First, get rid of that archaic thing, go to eBay and get a Mallory Comp110 if the engine will stay basically stock or even a mild streetport...Comp140 and regulator for anything more aggressive...

i was wondering if i could just mount it in the engine bay. i dont see why i couldnt because older cars used to have them right on the engine. but im just checking.

Those are mechanical pumps. An electric one needs to be as close to the fuel pick-up as possible and below the tank itself on an external application, if possible....there's a reason you only see that on OLD cars...

also there is a white plastic thing that the output of the old fuel pump goes into, then a hose comes out and connects to the metal gas line to the carb. is that some kind of regulator and can i take it out and run a straight line to the fuel pump and then to my new holley regulator?

That is the fuel filter...that far back from the carb, you want to get a pleated style filter to minimize fuel flow restriction...don't go with a disc style filter back there....and yes, you MUST have some kind of filter back there, so you MUST NOT run a line directly between the gas tank and the metal fuel line....you'll pay dearly when the crap gets into those lines and kills flow...

then there is another white thing that is mounted pretty close to where the spare tire outline is. it has a hose from the fuel return line and then its output goes to the tank. what is that thing and can i remove it.

It is a safety valve to prevent raw fuel from pouring out in case you turtle the car and the fuel hose rips out...ask Manntis if you think it will never happen to you....

and one last thing haha...im putting in a different gas tank that i bought new for my other 7 a few years ago, just because i know its good and the one on the one im fixing up could be bad, so im not taking any chances. but the newer gas tank has only 3 places for lines to attatch, but the new one has four, one is plastic and is farther back from the other mettal outputs. the newer tank has a circle in the same place as the plastic but it is part of the tank and hasnt been cut out or anything. so i dont know what to do about this. and i also need to know where i can buy a fuel sensor unit, the thing that plugs into the wire that runs to the fuel gauge,

The gas tanks are year specific...the spare tire well will reflect if yours will work...beyond that, I can't help, I've never had to bother with that stuff....

you didnt understand me, i know what a fuel filter is and where it is, i figured out one of the white things is a vent and the other is a safety thing. i think the 4th outlet on the tank is for some kind of charcoal thing by the aircleaner or carb.

That would make it an emissions vent....the carb draws vapors trapped in the charcoal canister to burn up on start up...
