Engine Tuning / Timing Questions (Holley 600)(and searched!)
Hey all -
I have been reassembling my engine and holy crap have I learned a TON of stuff.
Ive been studying up on the manuals, I think I downloaded them all on www.foxed.ca - Thanks FOX!
Question time!
1. When reinstalling my distributor, I aligned the dot on the gear to that vertical line on the shaft. I then pushed the distributor down into the engine, where the rotor turned a tiny bit due to the slanted gear so it obviously wont go in STRAIGHT.
Now the hard part. Page 52 of the Engine section of the manual is where is describes how to insert the distributor. Step 6 is what gets me!
6. Turn the distributor housing until the projection of the signal rotor aligns with the core of the leading side pick-up coil. Tighten the lock nut.
Then install rotor and cap.
Can anyone explain 6 to me please?
Question 2
I have a Racing Beat intake and a Holley 600 carb. After purchasing this, I realized I should have got a 465. Live life and learn from it. So for now, I am going to use it. I will be buying a new fuel pump with a regulator to suggested specs.
Does anyone have any experience with this setup? If so, what do you recommend for jets, adjustments, etc.
As always, I appreciate everyones input. This forum has helped me immensely, and I continue to learn daily because of it.
Thanks!
Chris Glog.

What number six is simply asking you to do is align the distributor rotor to what would be the firing posiiton for L1 before locking down the nut--
Be aware of which ignitor is leading and which is trailing, the rotation direction of the rotor is deceptive.

Maybe this will make it easier: When your dizzy is in correctly, the rotor will be pointing straight at L1 on the dizzy cap. When you put your dizzy in, did you make sure that the leading mark (yellow) was lined up with the pin? Once this is done and your marks are lined up on the bottom of the dizzy, drop it in, and the rotor should be pointing directly at L1 on the cap.

What 6. exactly means is this:
Remove the rotor and the cover. You will see a thing with 4 teeth on it (signal rotor). The leading pickup is the one facing towards the radiator. There is a little part that sticks out on the pickup (the part with the red/green wires is the pickup..just to be clear). One of the 4 teeth lines up with that pickup when the dizzy is set correctly.
When each tooth passes that pickup, that is when leading fires.
You just need to get it somewhat close. You will fine tune once you fire up the engine and put the timing light on it.
