Engine Rebuild

I know there are rotary motors out there that have done 200,000km and still going strong, I had a bloke last nite tell me that I would have to rebuild my engine after 50,000, and that you can only rebuild them 3 times before they are stuffed. I've got a bridgeport thats only 2 years old, not sure of the exact km's, but i know its been treated nice. Personally I think this guy is full of *****, he's v8 biased but I wanted to get you guys opinions.

heb.

That bloke is wrong. A rotary can be rebuilt many times. Various parts can be reused. In my opinion, rebuilding a rotary is like rebuilding a carburetor.

I've just rebuilt an engine which will probably be its fourth rebuild overall. I think it started life as an R5 series 12A. Then it recieved 13B rotor housings etc. Then I rebuilt it earlier this year because it needed new apex seals and a port job (mild ports). It overheated right after break-in (bed-in or whatever you guys call it) due to a bad radiator, so I just rebuilt it again after porting the intakes even larger. The only things I changed were the soft seals and rotor housings (they got crushed). The apex seals were fine to reuse.

It depends on the porting but a bridgeport rebuilt after 50,000 km won't be considered unusual.

heb09- what is its compression and oil consumpeion they are usually good indicators of engine condition?

Some drivers look after their engine servicewise but use high revs all the time on a bridgey. Thus, the engine will wear out far quicker than stock.

With occasional club level racing then 50,000km would be the time to be looking carefully for wear.

oil consumption is fairly low. Although it does run rich because of the way its setup. I've heard that the apex seals are what makes all the difference.. You can buy seals for $200 or $1000. And depending on your choice, is how tough your motor is, and how long it will last? This baby has never been raced at a track. Purely just a pride and joy car. The previous owner only wanted to sell it to someone who would look after it, and reckons he vary rarely takes it over 3 1/2 rpm.

My engine cost around $3000 when it got bridgeported. Thats AUS dollars so it'd probably be a fair bit cheaper then that
