Engine number

While there is good information on body numbers, I have not been able to find anything on engine numbers to establish when it was built. Does anyone know of a list? Was it a world wide system or different numbers for different markets? Mine is 2390184 which is a hell of a lot of 12As if it is a significant item.

Its a great pity the engine number does not line up with the body number. One of my tow vehicles is a Ford Fairmont Ghia where the two are identical. If I ever got a rebuilt engine I would hate to think it was an older series.

In addition to the vin no, my car has an additional tag RX7 CSH 25X which also must signify something.

For VIN info, try here: http://www.wigglepup.com/RX-7/ref_vin.php

It's not engine specific, but will tell you when the car was constructed.

I have a carfax account but find their info pretty vague.

the only people that i know of that can tell you if the motor is original, is the dealer. if you have them run a warranty report, it usually has the engine number on it.
the number seems to mean nothing by itself

Yeah the Atkins thing tells you what year car it came from. But the info is VERY VERY vague and definately worth $20

The engine number is usually on the leftside of the engine near the distributor. mine is 12A2390184 in a 1985 model car body number SA22C 702986.
