engine dies after 15sec ????
Hey guys, trying to bring an '84 gsl-se back to life. So far I've gotten the engine to start but it dies after about 15 seconds. I'ts done this about 4 times (I've only gotten it to start this many times). Is this normal and should I keep starting it and waiting for it to run the way it's supposed to OR is there something I need to look at. Thanks in advance -Alex

Alex- Umm... ok... Fuel infected or Carburated? If it is fuel infected- I would make sure you have oil pressure during those 15 seconds and see if you can get it to come back...It might be that the computer has to re-program itself because a battery has been out of the car for so long...and I know someone is going to tell you that, that is bull ****- Well- You can be the judge I have had one come back because of this... I belive that I actually had to adjust the TPS on mine... not sure.....Might have been my Starion!!! eeek! Fighen words!
If the car is carburated... I would make sure that you have fuel flowing through the carb..it almost sounds like your starving the engine for fuel... I would check float levels...make sure that both bowls look even... check to see that your floats are POLY-something...not brass...if they are brass...pull them out and check for leaks...
Now...if the car is fuel injected- If you feel comfortable- Take the fuel rail off... Make sure you have fuel coming to the rail...and then hook up the injectors and make sure they are spaying...by turing the engine over VERY qucikly...otherwise your going to DOUSE yourself and possibly burn the damn thing up!! If you are getting a little drip...Take them out (taking notice to which one goes where) and soak them in a solvent that will attack the varnish...carb cleaner...exc. Again- These are things that I have done to make one run...HOWEVER...I am not an expert. You want to be sure the injectors are giving a spray and not dripping...
It truely sounds like the engine is starving for fuel- If the carb has not been re-built... buy a kit- I just did mine and it was simple has hell... The hardest part was allowing it to sit in the tank for a couple days to break down the varnish! Be PATIENT- Reserecting one of these things is hard...
With all this said about fuel... Check compression- However I am a little skeptical about that because your starting it- however...I dont know! Be careful not to wash your seals either... Just be the judge on how much fuel your putting into the engine- If you do wash the seals...STOP- pull the plugs out and post that this has happened.
Good luck!

Souds like you're just not getting enough gas.... Could be a clogged filter or bad pump. The car does have gas in the tank, right?
Anyway, I'm sure that one of the experts in FI will be along shortly (can you say LongDuck?)...

Thanks guys, the pump and filter have been changed so I'm guessing it's the injectors. I won't have a chance to get to them for awhile though. I appreciate the info. SCCAIT7, I'll keep you in mind. If you race and need help at the track let me know. If I can slip away from everyday life, I'd be happy to help. -

hm. lmk what results you get.
cuz i'm getting the same problem right now...lol. but this is on a jspec 13bt in a fc. gonna try changing the fuel filter tomorrow and order a walbro. so i'll see how it turns out heh
it just feels\sound a lil akward for it to be fuel stuff, cuz it fires up nice and strong, but it dies instantly once time is up.

A couple of things to check:
1. Do the electrical test on the AFM, if it is not working the car will quit running after a few seconds.
2. Check the ECU, I had one that got wet and did exactly what yours is doing. I have heard the same thing from another SE owner, his window was leaking and the rain drained onto the passenger floor causing the same problem.

Yeah, it'll start so I'm not so sure it's the injectors. It hovers right around 1000rpm (very steady) and then just dies. The 'puter hasn't seen any water. The AFM is the suspicion. There are a couple of readings that are close to but not exactly what they should be. E2 to Vb should be 200-400 ohms but it measures about 140ohms. E2 to Vs is 20-400 closed and 20-1000 open. Closed it's about 130, when I open it, it will swing to just over 500 and fall right back to 130 (I'm guessing this is normal but not sure). SCCA, I'll send you an email sometime this week.

no no it could be as easy as takin of te fule line and let it pump som gas out to gett all of the air out of the system cause i know when myn runs out of gass no matter what i do ya it will only run for like 15 seconds and even when i pul the line there is alot of gass and preshure it weird
but wourth a try
