Engine cross member studs

Hey guys,

So i am installing a new engine cross member and i ran into a slight problem. When i was doing up one of the 4 nuts, one snapped off with part of the stud.... Great. So now three of them are done up good and one is left with a little nub and nothing for a nut to grab onto.

So i looked at the top and there is 2 bolts/studs that go from the top of the frame rail to the underside where you use nuts to secure the cross member. I looked at the 4 studs and they seem like they are riveted, and cannot be simply turned out with a ratchet.

So i am wondering what i should do about the broken one. I could slap it all back together but it will have issues down the road. From what i can see i am unable to get this bolt/stud out due to seem kind of riveting. I could weld it with a jack in place to hold up the broken side as much as possible which may make it pretty strong. Or i suppose it could be ground/drilled out and another stud could be slid through the hole.

Does anyone have any ideas or has been down this road before?

Thanks,

Nathan

Are they welded on bolts or studs?

It all depends on where the stud broke.

If you can get a bite on it with a set of VICE GRIP BRAND NAME vice grips try and back the stud out. (I'm a stickler on name brand special tools like vice grips)

If it is flush or has a lip or has a chip that you can get a screwdriver into you can chip on the stud with a screwdriver to back it out.

If its deep in the metal. Drill the stud and tap it and back it out slow.

NOW if its a welded in bolt then grind it down to nothing and weld on a threaded rod... Thats why they make threaded rods

There is another option regardless of what type of bolt/stud it is. Cut the bolts off; all of them. Then drill four holes where you want to put the bolts. Then take a metric tap set and tap it... Problem solved

he's talking about the studs that are welded in for the engine cross member. i would grind out the old one and find a new bolt and weld it in place

or drill out the bolt from the top where it is welded to the frame and run a longer lag bolt throught there. it will need t be tightened from both bottom and top but at least you would know its is right.

I ended up grinding the top off and punching it through, i used a tranny bolt with the same nut on it and it looks like it'll work well.

Thanks for the input.

I'm confused. When did the weld the studs for the engine cross member? In the front cover? Or are we talking about the suspension cross member?

If it's the front cover, they are threaded. Find a buddy with a welder and weld a nut on the end and spin it out.
