engine bogging at 4500 rpm in 3rd gear--
i have a 84 gsl rx7 original condition no mods===ok---ive been searchin all mornin in the forum to find something similar to the problems im havin----havent been able to find anything close------i've had my 7 at the dealership 2xs nothing wrong w/ the carb already had them spank me for $105.00 an hour to work on my baby----the problem is ------ wen i floor it its fine in second gear but wen shift to third and hit 4500 rpm and it does it again in fourth at about 5000 rpm it starts "boggin" is the only term i can think of---its like its holdin back and starts sputtering like it gonna shut off-------my edjemacated guess(which doesnt amount to a pile of beans since i dont know nufin bout rotory engines) is the fuel filter!!!! which in all the documentation from the original owner has never been replaced and the fuel pump was changed about 10yrs ago----i will be replacing these 2 items soon----but what i want to know ifn there is anything else that it could possibly be---that way i have a heads up on what else needs to be replaced-----now as long as im not playin around in and slowly acclerate i never have the problem----but i have a lead foot ive always owned sports cars of some sort!!

I have the same problem but mine has a new motor swap and if I take off slow and smooth nothing if I floor it no matter what gear it sputters than clears out. BUT when I put high octane fuel it runs much better go figure
you need to look for vacuum leaks sparkplugs cap rotor timing fuel filter spark plug wires dirty airfilter fuel pump

filter first, then pump. you may also want to run some MMO (Marvel's Mystery Oil) through a few tanks of gas to clean the fuel system (particularly the jets). if you still have a problem after all that, then you may want to PM Sterling or Rx7Carl they are our resident carb geeks ...
good luck

check with filter/pump first then like i say to everyone else, make sure you seoncaries are working. the are supposed to begin to open ~4k rpm due to vacuum at WOT. will be hard to test for that though since its better for it to be under load when trying to check.

I guess fuel pump. Any shop will check the filter... If they didnt, never take it back to that shop! The fuel pump recently took a crap on my car and it acted exactly the way you described your problem. It would be a good idea to upgrade to a better pump because stock pumps suck if you do ANY modification to the engine at all. Its not hard to do at all. Part of the fun of these cars is learning how to fix them.

Where are you in VA? What dealer did you take it to? DEFINITELY start with the filter. If you live in NoVa, and decide to do the pump too, lemme know... I'm in NoVa, and I have a 1 month old pump sittin' on a shelf...

Hey kittykat, I would be a little peeved at the dealership for not replacing the $2.50 fuel filter first thing. It should be the first thing on any competant mechanic's troubleshooting list, and something they can usually milk you for a quick 25 bucks!
If your car sat for all that time then some problems can come from the fuel leaving a coating of varnish on very sensitive carburetor parts. (Needle valves, this sort of thing.) Usually this sort of thing results in an idling problem.
What you describe though, what with it working crappy one drive and well the next, sounds a bit like you have rust in your fuel tank that is causing some trouble.
You may have to change that fuel filter a couple of times, and then you may need to get another Rx-7 enthusiast to help you diagnose the trouble, or begin doing the work yourself.
-I'm willing to bet that noone at the dealership where you take your car actually owns and drives an FB.

kittykat. Did you get this problem solved? My 85 GSL is doing the same thing I think. Get on it in 2nd or 3rd and run it up to 6-7k. Shift and "bogs" down to 3.5-4k. Let off gas get back on it and seems to run fine. Going to change the fuel filter this weekend and see if that solves the problem. What did you find solved your problem?
