Engine bay insulation

I picked up a cheap RX-7 as a project and noticed something which is odd to me. I'm hoping someone has some insight. I was looking in the engine bay and under the cooling fan is a strip of yellow insulation. It is wrapped around what I believe is the oil cooler line and finishes on the passenger side. I'm curious if this should be there or if someone put it there being silly.
Thanks

On the SAs (79/80) the oil cooler mounted below the radiator had a black foam pad that was
mounted between the top of the FMOC and the bottom of the radiator. Its function is to make sure
air goes through the cooling devices and not through the opening. Not sure how this looked on the
later series cars that came with FMOC after the beehives were dropped.

Someone may have replaced the old foam blocker because it was falling apart.

i'm fairly sure i remember the same black foam on my '81. i simply never saw my '82 enough before it got stolen, but i have no reason to believe it wouldn't have been the same. i never realized it had an actual function, so thanks for that.

i'm with you in the thought that the PO probably replaced it with whatever is there now.
