electrical, starter probs 84 gs
ok guys.
This is the first time i have posted on here,so here goes.
1984 gs got for free from sister. set for 3yrs. and caused a multitude of problems, brakes, slave cyl. ect. Been driving it for about 2 weeks after fixin probs.
Has been acting like has a bad spot on the flywheel-grinding when you try to start it, if you rock it back and forth in gear you could get it to catch.
Today had brother start it and bring it over to the house to warm up. he didnt check the oil (everyday thing on everything i drive) so i shut it off and checked. it was ok. went to start back up and nothing. no click no buzz. Pushstarted it so i could get to school. got to school, shut it off and tried it again, just to see. it would only make a sound like a servo going in and out, silenoid--slow? if i kept the key turned, it would sound like it was spinning very slowly, but not engaged. got back out from school, tried it and nothing, not even a click. had freinds push start again. got home and tried, would crank, rough and metalic(grinding), but would not start. rolled it out of barn and bumped it, fired right up??? put back in barn, tried again, and same as when i got to school. cleaned battery post, checked voltage, checked load amps, fuses, nothing out of norm.
Please help, I'm stumped!!
thanks in advance

Bad starter?
If your battery checks out just fine, and you have problems with the starter pinion gear not engaging the flywheel - this may be caused by the solenoid on the starter not poping the pinion gear (the small one) up against the flywheel with enough force to engage the flywheel teeth. If this is the problem, you may hear spinning (slow or fast) of the starter, but no engine rotation, and/or no click/buzz/spin at all. These would be signs of either bad wiring going to the starter, a bad starter solenoid (integral to the starter mechanism), or a bad starter motor (i.e., not carrying enough current to shift the solenoid and move the pinion gear to the flywheel.
You might try swapping out starters and see what happens. Just this morning, getting ready to leave for work, my 84SE did the 'spins-no-start' thing - tried it and it fired right up on the 2nd try. Sometimes, it just gets stuck. Go figure.
Getting stranded somewhere is something else, entirely, however. I'd drop a new starter in there in short order. Only takes about 2 hours if you take your time and do it right, and wipe down the oil pan while you're at it... But that's me. HTH,
