Electrical Charging

Help!

I own an 82 RX-7 with a 79 engine. After serious procrastinating - and having the car sit idle for 7 months - I took it into a local shop to get it up and running. The mechanic noted that the system was not charging and that eventually the battery may discharge.

My thinking is that the alternator may need replacing. However, before I spend any bucks, or get over my head, are there other things to look for and/or replace? Not being mechanically inclined (some would say "declined") any help and guidance is appreciated.

PS - I posted some questions a few months back and received a number of responses. I know its late, but I just want to thank those who commented and provided their time and experience.

Very simple to take alternator off and have it tested for free at AutoZone or Advance Auto Parts, etc. It is free for almost all places.

Edit: Also at same time, have them test your battery. Also free.

Thanks!

This brings up another question. 1982 chassis and a 1979 engine. I would assume the alternators may be different, but what about the voltage regulator - which model year would I purchase (if one is necessary)?

The '79 has an external voltage regulator and the '82 has an internal regulator. If the connector on the back of the alt has only two wires, then you have the '82 alt in there. I live pretty close to you. If you need any help, I can come by and give you a hand. If the alt is bad, I would look into upgrading it in the process. I have a S5 ('89-'91) RX-7 alt on mine. You can get one used pretty cheap. I have my old alt off of my GSL-SE that you could have. It still charges fine but may have a bad diode. It would at least get you by until you got another alt.

Thanks Kent - may take you up on the offer!

Being a first time part buyer - are there certains brands to look for, and conversely, certain brands to avoid regarding eloectrics?

Well, if you are going to get a reman alt. AutoZone has a free replacement warrenty (limited lifetime, I believe). I have heard of people that have gotten bad alts at AutoZone and had to exchange them several times before getting a good one. The alts that came with the car (Mitsubishi) are very good quality. If you get a replacement from the dealer, they are pretty expensive. I think the best way to do it is to either have your alt rebuilt by a good alt/starter shop or to get a used alt (mine was only $30 for my S5 alt) and maybe upgrade in the process. Many times you can get a used one so cheap, that even if it is bad, it will be cheaper to rebuild than to get a replacement from AutoZone or some other auto parts store.

As I said, I would be more than happy to check it out for you. We could even throw on my old alt (I don't need it) to get you by until you get a replacement.
