...but not before the frame rusts. As soon as the epoxy cracks, thosee suckers go. There is a company making stainless steel backbones for the D, but it's $9,000 just for the bare backbone!

and yes, there are LiIon batteries out for EV applications with 18 - 20 year warranties.

About "yeah, but you have to get the electricity from coal burning plants"

Given a coal-burning plant, and assuming a standard conversion that keeps the original transmission, diff, etc., EVs are 97% cleaner then the internal combustion engine car including the pollution that is generated at the electrical power plant. Remember, it's much easier to clean up one central power plant than to keep all the individual ICE cars tuned up and running cleanly.

Yes, they are. How was what you said a metaphor?

Here (since you again, don't know what you're saying), is the definition of metaphor: something used, or regarded as being used, to represent something else; emblem; symbol. Or: a figure of speech in which a term or phrase is applied to something to which it is not literally applicable in order to suggest a resemblance, as in “A mighty fortress is our God.”

I'm sorry, was this a question?

Listen to? You? I'd rather choke myself. Just because instead of admitting that you're a moron you remain calm doesn't make you more mature than someone else.

As for electic cars being slow, watch it take on a Viper: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G32E4li3xHI

Realistically, it cost about $0.20 to go as far as a gallon of gas will take you. So yes, you save money.
SOME electric cars aren't slow, that's true, I agree with that. However, to create a fast electric car it's quite the initial investment and they still don't have that long of a range before you run out of juice. Which brings me to the next point, although they are more cost efficient as far as operation goes you will get further on a gallon of gasoline than you will on the equivalent charge in a battery, we're not that far advanced in the technology yet. You will save money AFTER you pay for the building of the car. These are out of reach for most people and are therefore not only NOT the "perfect engine swap" for an RX-7 but they're just not realistic for a large amount of the population of America.

Well I'll add this: It IS the perfect engine swap for me! If I didn't want a rotary, this would suit my needs PERFECTLY. I'm 12 miles from town, so a 60 mile range (which is typical) is more than adequate for most of my trips. I could build that car for about the same cost as restoring most any vehicle, including my RX7. If I needed to go further, I have 7 other vehicles to use. I hope one day to build an electric; can't wait, actually...

Remember 1/2 of the population is below average.

That, especially this part,

is a lot better than what else has been said in this thread. It doesn't seem as if anyone else has taken into consideration the limitations of actually building this car on a "normal person's" budget.

Beautiful looking car. Neat idea. Don't know that I'd ever go for it though, unless you can put some kind of scent emitter on the car that lets out gas fumes and a chainsaw under the hood that revs with the gas pedal.

It'd be interesting to do this conversion with the a123Syatems high density Lithium Polymer batteries...
