Inefficient? Heavy? Less power? Inability to drive long distances? Super expensive?
This is a dumb idea, it's cool that it was done once (maybe to see if it could be done) but anyone repeating it and hoping to gain anything from it is a moron.

and you really dont have to use an electric company, solar is cool.
Ide build an electric car as a runabout but still have a sweet cruiser

As for the weight *distribution*, I'll bet there are batteries in the trunk too.
Not a bad choice, actually, for an electric conversion. Most have around a 60 mile range, can run 60 MPH eaisly, & oh did I mention that electric motors have FULL TORQUE at ONE RPM? :-)

You're not saving any money doing this and it's most definitely not "the best engine swap".
If you actually would have read my post you would've seen that I was responding to someone who said that it's the "perfect engine swap"
you.

That's cool, but only by showing that an rx7 can be electric. You want efficiency? Get a 100+mpg scooter. You want speed and moderate efficiency? My Yamaha R6 can pull off 55mpg. It can also do over 160mph, and runs under 11 seconds flat in the quarter mile, just not all 3 at the same time.
Until they figure out a way to make the overall cost per mile of an alternative fuel vehicle - that includes maintenance (those hybrid batteries get damn expensive), auto cost (R&D and new manufacturing tools cost money too), as well as fuel cost (since it now takes more energy to create ethanol than the chemical potential energy contained within it), it's all just a gimmick.

Electric cars are far more efficent than gas cars in actual operation, its the problem of creating and piping the energy to them that makes the overall concept inneficient. I love electric cars, seriously I found one at a junk yard, pulled the motor controller for 10 dollars and sold it for over 900 on ebay.

Do you worry about charging your cellphone? I am saying that a electric engine would be fun in a RX-7 "And more reliable". Im sorry but if that disturbs you then the problem is yours not mine.

Actually, for the amount of energy, the grid is cheaper. Range is obviously a problem with current battery tech.

For a really cool, really expensive electric car. (I want one)

If you knew your history you would even know there was a point when electric cars sold better then gasoline in the early 1900's, they were cleaner, faster, and safer at the time as well with a much better range of travel then a full tank of gas back then.
You want me to look at the Tesla Roadster? That vehicle costs $92,000 and that's for the base model, hardly inexpensive... it might be fast and it might be reliable but it's $92,000 for a base model!
The EV1 cost the company $80,000 for EACH ONE, yet again, this car might be fairly quick and it might be reliable but it cost $80,000 to make one and they're not readily available!
Oh, electric cars sold better in the early 1900's? Of course they were cleaner, faster and safer, so were the steam powered vehicles which were also popular... I haven't seen one of those on the street yet.

Why would I worry about charging my cell phone? First, I don't rely on my cell phone as transportation and second, IF somehow I could hop on and ride it like a magic carpet and we kept the amount of time that it held it's charge the same as it is now, it wouldn't leave me stranded after two and a half hours on the freeway. If you were asking me whether or not I worry about charging my cell phone because it might die then, YES I DO.
You weren't saying that an electric engine would be fun in an RX-7, you said it was the "perfect engine swap for this vehicle".
Don't talk to me about maturity when you display so much ignorance to a topic that you continue to speak about on an almost daily basis.

metaphor's are commonly used in everyday life. If somone said they could eat a horse do they litteraly mean it. Again real mature but maybe you should listen first before throwing a tempertantrum like a 3yr old.

They should have used Lithium Ion batteries instead of far heavier, less efficient lead acid ones. The newer generation of LiIon in electric car apps have a life expecancy of 20 years or so - you have to worry about the body rusting long before battery failure.
This particular car had16 batteries under the hood, 12 behind the seat; 16 above the Dodge rear axle. To keep the rear tires from spinning, they changed it to 72 batteries over the rear axle and added wheelie bars - the front end kept jumping up from the torque.
As for electic cars being slow, watch it take on a Viper: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G32E4li3xHI
Realistically, it cost about $0.20 to go as far as a gallon of gas will take you. So yes, you save money.

I don't think there are any 20 year lithium ion batteries available right now. I haven't seen any batteries more than about 4 years old that haven't expired from plain old age, of course those are the batteries they made 4 years ago, but even new tech I doubt will last more than about 7-8. Plus temperature extremes are really hard on LIon batteries and they will get plenty of that in a car. Eventually they'll come up with batteries that will at least suffice for a commuter car if not for a road tripper, but not just yet I think.
Plus, eventually someone will put one of those electric motors in a DeLorean and then the batteries will DEFINITELY wear out before the body rusts!
