Effort to replace clutch slave

Is this a big job? It looks hard to get at. Weekend or just an hour or two? I'm getting tired of adding fluid all the time.

Which modle do you have? The easliest way is to remove the oil filter first. Two bolts and it is off. I would put the hose on the clutch cylinder first before installing it back on. Then you will have to bleed the system.

It's an 85 GS, so the filter's definitely in the way. But this doesn't sound too bad, maybe an afternoon or so. Thanks.

If I recall its a 10 or 12 mm. If you have a beehive oil cooler (like me) save yourself a headache- get a swivel-head socket in the right size to get them out. Real easy removal with one, 30-45 minute job with bleeding, etc.. I..hate..that...damn...beehive.

not even an hour. i have never removed the oil filter but everyone has their ways. basically you have to slide off the clip at the steel line from the clutch master cyl, then take a 10mm wrench and break the steel line's fitting free from the slave cyl's line. afterwards, there are two 12mm bolts that hold the slave cyl onto the bellhousing. it will take a long and a short extension to get to it. if you have a swivel handy, that would be great. remove the bolts and you can lift the slave from the trans. you can then take a 17mm wrench and break the cyl line from the slave. i would replace both though. install in reverse order. be careful not to overtighten the slave cyl bolts. they strip eaisly. you can bleed yourself by connecting a rubber hose that fits snugly around the bleeder screw on the slave and run that line to a can of brake fluid. pump the clutch and it will push the air out. or you can have someone help you and bleed it like you would the brakes.
