Ebay troubles opinions please

i recently sold my 84 gs rx-7 with 62k miles on it on ebay. It sold for $800 i originally paid $1000 for it. I was like ok i'll eat the loss because i had another rx which all my attention is going into. In the auction i said it was a restore car cause the clutch was acting funny and it had moderate rust. The car ran fine though and started right up. So the lady who bought it drove it like 800 miles home and the clutch goes out actually the pressure plate. She did not seem to upset about that but then she emails me saying that the car was extremly rusted and there was rust on the bottom of the doors. and that the exhuast was falling apart. she wants me to give her some money back but i dont think thats fair.

what do you guys think the engine / drivetrain alone is worth with only 62k miles on it?

what would you guys do in this situation?

QuagmireMan 10-19-04 08:39 PM

and i do insist that you refrain from saying "Stick it in her butt" :D

Stevan 10-19-04 08:47 PM

I paid $800 for an 83 that had a lot of rust around the rear window drains, and the spare tire, and through the gas tank.
The motor had been recently rebuilt by RP in Margate FL, I was happy with the deal.
What did she expect for the money, a new car?

Anex 570 10-19-04 08:48 PM

Well if it makes her feel that much better then give her like $50-100 back and some parts or something. I mean put yourself in her postion from being upset.. but dont give her a huge some because if you think thats not that much money for a car, let alone a sports car. This is just some ideas, I mean you could mabye just find some decent used exaust parts she's talking about. Just dont take a huge loss.

Hades12 10-19-04 08:48 PM

She had a chance to inspect the car when she received it. Sold as is, where is.

I would not give her anything.

The engine is worth the cost of the car.

JKM 10-19-04 08:49 PM

Can you link to the auction page? I'd like to see what it reads...

However, for $800, I don't think you'd owe her any money back. It's her responsibilty as the buyer of a car to see the car first before she buys it. If she didn't, too bad. If she had paid more for the car, I may say give some cash back, but I'd say $800 is more than a fair price for a running FB with such low mileage. Coincidentally, that's how much I paid for my FB a few weeks ago, and yes it needs a lot of work but damn if it wasn't worth the price I paid!

Not a bad idea, but a tough call. I mean she didnt spend a fortune on it. But if that'll passify her, then your done with the deal, and on good terms. And tell her about this forum!

autowagon 10-19-04 08:55 PM

800 isnt all that much for a running car i just paid that much for my rb exhaust for a car that needs the engine rebuilt. (So i'm jumpin the gun a little) Tell her to have a nice day.

Gregs 10-19-04 08:56 PM

i think this should be in the lounge, Yes you sold a 1st gen, but other than that is has no place here....

oh and tell the bitch tough luck, dont give her any money back

John64 10-19-04 09:13 PM

You owe her nothing! She purchased a car and looked at it. So she is dead in the water. No problems putting another 800 miles on it. Its buyers remorse, she gets it home then has someone tell her its trash. When she bought it, it was fine now?????

My 2 Cents

john, i want a speaker box like yours, how much to make one! :)

She should have known the risks of buying something sight unseen. Cars are one item I wouldn't buy on ebay unless I was prepared for the worst. You may take a hit on your rating, but explain it in your response to her feedback and let it go.

Moonchopper 10-19-04 09:35 PM

It's her own damn fault, plain and simple. She should have asked for more pictures before traveling 800 miles. Besides, the door rust can probably be fixed. If not, oh well. It isn't detrimental to the driving/handling of the car.

And a RUSTY EXHAUST?! My 7 that I recently got for $500 had rust on the doors, a cut off muffler (I was going to replace the exhaust anyways), what I THINK is an O2 sensor that has rusted completely off, a crappy maaco paintjob (just enough to keep it from rusting ;)), and it doesn't even run! IMHO, that's a damn good deal for just $500. She should be THANKING you for a car with only 62k miles on it!

You can't make everyone happy. She had the opportunity to look at it before she bought it and you informed her of the clutch problem (I'm assuming you made no guarantee?). I personally would not drive a car with a clutch problem 800 miles. That's ALOT of distance to travel in one trip.

Well, now that I've typed all of this, let me play Devil's Advocate: Were you aware of the rust? Did she ask you about any rust that you knew about?

From my experiences of buying/selling a car, you should never tell the potential buyer minor things that are wrong (i.e. things that would affect the reliability of the car in the future, or which make the car dangerous in someway.) If the potential buyer asks about something, you tell them about it, but only answer their question. It may seem like rotten business, but it's how business works.

ebay is very specific about this...caveat emptor...stick her in the butt...lol...no, really though, the running valvetrain at 62 K miles is worth that kind of money ALONE...link her to this thread if she needs to see it in print. A rebuilt long block is $1200 on the cheap. A good body, no drivetrain, is worth $600, paint good, too, then $750...no engine at all. A good used 12A by itself at 90,000+, around $400, with a tranny, $500.....it should be obvious she is ahead in this particular game STILL....

BMS2004 10-19-04 10:18 PM

well in the auction you said it was a restore car and "the clutch was acting funny and it had moderate rust. " I don't really see that you owe her anything but that is your call

jbcobra 10-19-04 10:30 PM

From her profile on ebay it looks like she has been selling a bunch of RX7 stuff. She obviously knows what this stuff is worth and has cash to fix the car. You covered the problems in your description. I'd tell her sorry but no refunds.

heres a link for the auction http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...tem=2492712197

Very Fair, her mistake. But, if 50 bones would shut her trap, I would do it.

John64 10-20-04 07:17 AM

Don't ask me to make one. It two full weeks to make that bad boy! I would'nt do it for under $400. I just sold off my fiberglass 12" ones to Rotofire, i think he is going to be real happy with them. Sorry about the tread jacking!

looks like she bought it just to part it out anyways. But if your looking to just give out money for no real reason. I can give you my paypal addy 50.00~100.00 will shut me up :bigthumb: at least for a little while. Did you already give her feedback? if not wait till she leaves some for you. That way if she puts it in your ass you can return the favor.

Refer her to the forum anyways. This thread specifically and she might actually make post traffic in the for sale section :rlaugh:

You looked at it wrong, She was the buyer on thoese auctions, and looks like she has bought enough stuff to build a new car.

QuagmireMan 10-20-04 04:25 PM

she wants 300 bucks back... that means the car is hers of $500 after i paid $1000

Hades12 10-20-04 04:28 PM

Just tell her no, or tell her to bring it back and you will refund the money.

From the pics your car looked to be a 800 - 1500 car.

QuagmireMan 10-20-04 04:32 PM

she put a new pressure plate on it and tire rod ends though......
