yea you can use one of those to convert the airbox inlet into the standard intake hose. I cut some of the radiator support and ran a tube out. I'll post pics tomorrow. btw you need a SE for the above to make sense..
edit: though this is the one I have on my SE, direct fit. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ADAPT...QQcmdZViewItem

That Bomz cone filter is useless. It sucks in about the same amount of air as the stock airbox. However, you can use that metal adapter to use a standard 3" K&N cone filter on it, that works MUCH better.
I bought that kit (from the same seller, I think) for the adapter plate, but I ran with that Bomz filter for a while until I actually got the K&N filter on it. The Bomz did nothing, but the K&N...wow.

did you guys know that a BMW from the junkyard has these adapters? They can be had for free and bolt right up to a stock Mazda airbox.
Check it out here

I've said it before, look for other cars with Bosch L-Jetronic injection and they might have a VAF adapter.
Well, TAS and I did some junkyard "research" and we found the perfect adapter for the B6.
The holes line up and the square is the correct size for the B6/B6E VAF.
It would fit a 2.5" filter and has tapered sides going into the VAF.
WAY BETTER THAN THE STUFF YOU SEE ON EBAY AND WHATNOT!!!
It's off a (84-90) E30 BMW (3-series).
I think TAS grabbed one off a 318i.
Best part is it's FREE!!!
FREEBEE!!! FREEBIE!!!
How do you spell freebie?

The only problem with using these on the SE is they bring in hot engine bay air, whereas the stock air box does bring in cooler outside air. If you do a little cutting, hacking and enclose the filter in a box to bring outside air in, you will see a minor benifit. The most noticeable difference is the intake is louder, if the exhaust isn't too loud.
