early SA sold on ebay #88
Hey guys, I been busting at the seams all week long on this one. I didn't want to get into a bidding war with anyone so here goes. Just sold today on ebay one of the earliest US Rx7s still in exsistance, in fact it was probably made on the first day of US production.
Mazda History, production of North America Model Rx-7s started in March of 1978 with 2999 cars being made that month. Starting with vin number Sa22c-500001. Of course I will assume that the plant operated 7 days a week therefore 3000 cars divded by 31 days in March and we come up with roughly 96 cars per day.
As you can see by the vin number this is #88 truly a rare car and clean find.
I will get better pictures once it has arrived from the shippers
Happy Holidays to all My christmas came a little early

That is a sweet find, and the coolest colr ever.Too bad it doesn't have the factory waffle wheels, but those should be easy to find.I hope you keep it as orignal as possible. That looks just like mine only mine is 6855 which is pretty early for a New England car.Good luck with this beauty, and I am jelous.

Paul is right to an extent from what Mazda has publicly told me, If i understood correctly There were 50 Preproduction models built without Vin#s as such they are unable to be titled what is the status/outcome of them I don't know some of these may have been used for crash testing or who knows what.
There are 2 vin number sequences he hit that nail on the head and I know some from other sources as well. All North American Cars started at the 5xx,xxx sequence the 1xx,xxx sequence is indicative of either a RHD JDM model or a import model outside of North America. Now I can't speak of vin #s on of this later type past roughly 1980 I know that upto 1983 most still used a Sa22c designation rather than the JM1FB we see here. All 3 of my RHD Savannas (JDM Rx7s) are 79 types with vin #s in the 1xx,xxx arena.
From Mazdas own literature the North American Vins started at 500,001 with production starting in March. Were 250 made on the first day, I don't know (i know that they made roughly 3k total in march). Was the first serial number sold to the public 500,025, It would not surprise me if more of the first 200 were not sold to the public, but rather given to Mazda execs.
I do like the idea of a registry to know where the early ones are, And where do i think the earliest production Rx7 is...... well I know that mazda owns #7 because I have seen it and so has most everyone that has been to Sevenstock the last few years. Because production car #7 quite appropriately I might add is picture here.

Thanks for all the compliments on it I really did buy it to preserve that vin number. As for how much I gave that is easy enough to find out but it was $3k plus the shipping of course.

I assume this is a non-sunroof car?If so it is exactly the same as mine, only mine is a non-ac car which I think is rare.
My car only has the one mirror, and I actually like it.It takes a bit of getting used to,but it isn't bad.
Mine is a Sprk Yellow 5/78 GS with black interior, and non sunroof,or ac,and is /was all original when I bought it in 2005.I have updated a few things, but I kept all the stock stuff for future use.

It is over 25 years old so it would be exempt many places except CA, however I have been collecting a stash of NOS early parts just for a car like this. It will be restored and as original as I can possibly make it down to a set of bridgestone rubber.
x605 when i get the car and get better photos you will see that this car does have a factory sunroof (thank goodness no one had to do an early 80s cut a hole in the roof thing)
It is optioned out as follows, Yellow ext, black interior, A/C (don't know if it is factory or dealer installed probably dealer) 5 speed and sunroof, I would not be surprised to find an original factory spare under the carpet with a NOS tire. I assume with all the other options it will have alloy wheels but i don't know for certain and may never know until i can do more checking.

yes but are they NOS ones I have a whole rack of them ranging from original NOS ones never seen the ground or light to White block letter ones used on GSLs and some that have absolutely no tread left. If she gets displayed with a NOS set of them she will also be blocked so that they really don't have weight one them and i will never drive her with them on there.

Hey rotarydude,
Do you have a shifter boot, factory radio, and pocket, and a nice dash pad to fix the one on the car?
That seems to be all it needs.I think you score a good deal on that early car.It just makes me even happier that I got a car that is very similar, but in other ways nicer as it was completly original for $2000.
Its a shame the car isn't on its factory paint, but the paint does look good in pics.
You can see my car in my signature under link to "My Car"

If you look at one of my earlier posts you can see the rims I will be putting on the car, they are a set of the very rare early type alloys
As to parts there are a few things that she will be needing I won't know for certain the extent and condition of each until it gets here, I have a NOS Radio face plate and shifter boot I even have some NOS dash trim pieces also.
I am not 100% certain how i am going to do the dash yet I have not sourced an original early type in black, and as someone else noted i have to correct the door panels. I do have several early radios(some even work) and i have an early clarion tape deck as well but unless I can say for certain that it came with the car i may not install it.
But I will be taking it one step at a time.

You rat bastard! There goes my title...oldest RX-7 on the road! Oh well, I STILL have the oldest single owner RX-7 on the road!
Very nice find...honsestly, I think that's awesome...I hope you take care of it!
Rich
EDIT: I just read your last post...I just bought a black '79 dash because mine has a crack in it (my fault...in my younger years I wasn't so smart and hit it...it cracked above the holes for the speaker). This one doesn't have the holes for the speaker, but if you want it let me know and we can work something out.
