Smile Dumb question about the Oil cooler.

Ok i recently bought an 85 resoration project by accident. I bid on an 81 parts car with no title on ebay. went to pic it up and the lady had two 7's there. I payed $167 and drove away with 2 rx's. Both virtuallly complete. the 81 is a pile of dog "leavings" but i got the needed parts for my current 85gsl scca / daily driver i was originally hunting..long story short the 85 rx i got from her (85 gs) needed nothing more then a fuel pump.
(she thought the motor was blown) Ha ha.. but it has a radiator and oil cooler i hadn't seen before.. all my 1st gens have had the top mount oil cooler. this one has a small long oil cooler similar to the 2nd gen's. and the radiator is shorter and fatter to accomodate the needed space. which unit is more effective. Should i swap them out? Let me know.

trevor

ps- i got tons of 1st and second gen parts. ask if you need any. by email only.. thanks

The air/oil cooler is more effective. It was stock on all cars 79-82, and the 84-85 GSL-SEs. After 85, all cars went back to the air/oil cooler when they realized it was better .

If you've got tons of 2ed gen parts, use a 2ed gen air/oil cooler,, a bit larger then the 1st gens. You can always install a fan on a air/oil cooler. but not on the 'beehives'. it's a straight forward swap/upgrade good for either street or track.

Why would you want to keep that non-functable 'cooler'
Your gonna need the pedestal for the oil filter from a 12a with an air/oil cooler too. take that 'beehive' and throw it across the street.

The beehive is a pos, not only does it not cool **** but it is real prone to leaks. And unless you wanna do some funky plumbing you can't run both. They both take hot oil from the same fitting in the front cover, so you'd have to "T" that or something. Just throw it out. As Mark said you'll need the pedastal, the hard water line (goes along pasenger side of bay) will be needed too as the water oil cooler one has a T on it for the extra hoses.
