Dual Fuel Filter Mod

Note that once you take the stock fuel pump and throw it far, far, far away, the fuel filter isn't really a problem anymore.
The fuel filter *is* a problem with the stock pump, because the stock pump is barely almost adequate, on a good day with a brand new clean filter.

Interesting point Peejay. I was assuming that the restriction was due to a fuel filter that couldn't handle the capacity, but maybe the true bottleneck is at the pump. I just installed my Carter today, so I guess I'll never know...
But I suppose in the mean time, this would still work for anybody stuck with the stock pump.

Put on a decent fuel pump and it doesn't mind having to pull through a less than ideal filter, it has sufficient excess capacity.
The nicest thing about getting a better fuel pump was that I didn't have to change the fuel filter every month. The pump paid for itself in the first year
Now, if you wanted to buff some turds, you could measure the line pressure (will be a vacuum) between the filter and the pump with the pump running, and check this against various other filters.

Just wondering how often do you guys find yourself changing your fule filters? The guys with the stock setup? Sorry for the thread hijack but this does pretain to what we are talking about here.

Some people say to change it yearly. I can usually see a difference in power with a new filter after a few months. You probably won't see "problems" for about a year though.

My avatar? lol
That was what the filter looked like when I first got the car, rusted gas tank, so bad that it leaked a river down my driveway the first time I filled to the top.

Goo now thats rusted.
My pinto gas tank is so rusted, that I have to change it every 500 miles, and when I drop the tank every 1500, I dump out 2 cups of crap. The worst thing, I can drop my tank in 2 minutes. only thing that holds it in place is 2 bolts with a strap.

okay im using this pic as a refrence. Where the red fuel filter is, my line is just straight lined there is no filter there. Was that the previous owners doing? or did that line just go straight to the carb, the line beside it had the stock fuel filter and i dont know weather i should put a filter on the straight line

another thread hijack, but for the nasty *** tank, empty all of the gas out and pull the tank. Get some chain links stick it in the tank and beat the **** out of it. Pressure wash let dry and pour red koat inside the tank. It will seal the tank and won't have anymore trouble. Let the **** sit completely open for a few days, have heard some horror stories of people replacing tanks to soon and clogging entire lines. Cheap, easy, effective. my .02cents

Fuel Filter Setup
This setup might be easier!
Run a 10micron Quart Size Filter Berfore the Fuel Pump
(Mount it to the Left Rail) and then a Russel 10micron Filter before the Carb.
See Pics
I change out the Elements about every 15,000 miles in my 84GSL.
Original Cost =$42.00
Elements Cost=$9.00
