Drum brake question

Hi, I have an 82 with drum brakes. How do I pull the E-brake cable out of where they go into the drums? I need to get the cable out of the way to pull the fuel lines off. TIA

you have to pull out the little bracket that the cable goes thru (thats the easiest way).

The bracket is a flat "L" shaped peice of metal with a slot that follows the curve of it, and then you rotate the cable out, by moving the blocked end towards the hole in the slot (slide it along the slot really). Its hard to describe without having a brake drum in front of me.

As for putting it back in,

You have to use a set of pliers and pull the spring back so you can get the cable end into the bracket.

Or, you can always use a screwdriver and pry the blocked end out (towards you if your looking dead on with the drums insides) and once it gets to the hole, push it through. but the first way is so much easier.

Not really sure if that will help, I have an 84 with drum brakes

Thanks, but im not sure what you mean by the blocked end. Is that the end that attaches to the shoe? I'll look at it tomorrow. I'd like to not cut it.

blocked end as in the end of the wire, it should be a big "block" looking psiece of metal about 3/8"x3/8"x1/2" rough estimate, it is bigger than the slot in the bracket but smaller than the whole in the end (of the slot)

OK,,first pull the wheels. then release the e-brake, right where the cable goes into the backing plate, you will see a small metal wire clip. pull those clips. one for each side. the ball end of the cable connects to the brake shoes. to remove the cable the intire brake assembly
has to be dis-assembled. each shoe has a pin that runs through it holding it to the backing plate. those you compress and turn. Those two pins removed and the shoes, adjuster, brake cylinder will stay because the metal brake line screws to that.keep all parts in a position so it looks the same as if it were on the car.
compress the spring where the e-brake cable connects to the shoe, and then it's free from the shoe. pull the cable through the backing plate, it's out. What ever you do, don't breath the brake dust.
