driveshaft options?

i have an '83 and i've narrowed my vibration down to that my rear u-joint is failing. what are my options?

i've heard you have to replace the whole propeller shaft - i've also been told there's a guy who rebuilds and balances driveshafts for $50 per u-joint.

if i were to snag one from a donor car and trust my luck, what years can i use?

thanks
-brad

ok this is what mine did. If this things goes it is not good. you can use any year seven rear end. First gen only. But becarefully i went with an 82 rear end and it made the speedo off. Mazda messed with the gearing every year so unless you go same year it will be off slightly. But do change it. change the drive shaft and rear end. trust me i been through this. It is not that hard to swap them out took me 2 hours beware of the parking brake cable. And if you do a good job you don't even have to bleed the brakes.

Okay, had to resuccitate this thread - it seems my rear U-joint is failing. MUST I buy the whole shaft? If so, what's a reasonable price for this part?

i had one custom made and balanced for my old SE, cost about $200 and they used the u-joints from a heavy duty model dodge truck. i never had another d-shaft prob with that car again. btw, it had a nutz streetport 13b with full rb exhaust and the dellorto tuned oh-so-nice. *sigh* sometimes i miss the old girl!

They say the U joints are stacked in type and cant be replaced. Well thats bullcrap LOL... The machine shop told me they have done several, they use a special u joint for it.. and it works

what kind of U-joint, Mike? Do you have a part number/name of manufacturer? I'll need one very, very soon...
