Well... first find out exactly what that sheet of metal is.... Secondly.... find a way to get it attached back to where it was to begin with, or if it is not essential, get rid of it.

Did you recently pull the driveshaft out then reinstall it?

I'd keep the heat shields if it were me. They don't weigh enough to get rid of and they do keep alot of heat away from the floorboards and all that tar-based soundproofing. It's easy enough to reattach whatever's come loose rather than tear it out.

The axle assembly from an '83 is much smaller than the '85 assembly and the pickup points for the trailing arms are different as well. I do believe that they pickups on the '85 axle are 20 mm lower than the '83 axle, which would possibly account for why the driveshaft is sitting higher and rubbing on the tunnel.

Reform the heat shields with your hand or HAMMER....
Mine started to rub and I just got under the car and reformed it by hand...

Set the parking and wheel brakes, let the clucth out in 1st and see it you get a clunk/thump/bang, you get the picture. If you do, check the tranny mount and the rear control arms. Make sure the body mounts for the upper arms are not rusting out.
