I was watching austrailian V8 supercars, and some guy tried to pass on a short strait and came into a corner way to fast, he just pitched the car through the corner.

and he managed to pass anouther car immediatly after the corner. just ******* hauling ***.

I do think that grip is faster, but then I see **** like this.

I think would be certain situations where drifting is faster than grip driving... Rally driving for instance. But from a physics point of view I don't see how losing traction is going to be faster than driving through a corner on the limit of adhesion.

Those of you who don't mind a bit of anime, check out Initial D. It's entirely based on the drifting scene in Japan and features FC's and FD's (the main antagonist races an FC).

Initial D seems to be what spurred on the drifting craze in this country.
Ive been a big anime fan since childhood but would appreciate a show about automobiles and performance driving a whole lot more if it was real...then! it would be badass

I like Initial D, and it's what first brought my attention to drifting. Almost sad to say, but that's how it goes sometimes.
I dunno about arguing over which is faster. I've never really heard a strong argument why drift would be faster. Maybe option did some videos about it awhile back? The show drifts they do are obviously slower, but if you are in a real 4 wheel drift, you're just beyond the limit of traction and thus, going faster than grip would permit. At any rate, this is the only point I could see why drift would be better...
But honestly, I know nothing about the physics of it and could be way off base here.

(BTW, stage 4 comes out in February in Japan, incase you guys didn't know. )

Drifting is only for show. Period. Before this "worldwide drifting craze", Initial D was the only thing taht got most ppl into drifting. They did a poll on it in the AE86 forum and i think something like 70% of them got into drifting because of Initial D. I however, have never seen an episode of Initial D.

I may be way off base here, but I would think that drifting around a corner would be faster due to the fact that rather than your tires slowing for the corner, and then coming back up to speed after, they just continue at speed, or possibly a little faster, and thus when exiting the corner there is less need to re-accelerate.

But like I said, I may be way off base, cause I have very little experience in actual drifting, and no technical knowledge to speak of on the matter.

i had my 7 out this past saturday it had snowed about a half inch but it was late and the plow trucks were slow to react... theres this parking lot we always just hang around in cuz its kinda secluded... never thought that the islands in the parking lot would make great objects to drift around ... ive previously owned a LT1 z28 which i never had the oppourtunity to drift but my friend who attempted to drift with me has a 170hp old school camaro and he just couldnt keep the ****** going sideways... i guess its just that w/ a manual transmission you can control power output alot better... after about 15 minutes of practice i had that baby sliding around those islands and everyone's jaws were on the ground! ... its supposed to snow tomorrow.. .ill try to post vids!!!

Yea vids would be sweet. Initial D is awesome, assuming you bear in mind its fiction, some people take it too serious, similar to the fast and the furious.
jayroc: you serious about 4th stage? That would be amaizing, the rest of its so damn good.

man my seven is the baddest drifter since my banshee, i swear if i lean and put my *** into it it responds instantly. just the other night nice j turn real short onl 70 or so feet. buzzin along in 3rd about 35 mph . no warning i grabbedsecond hammered it and threw the wheel into it. once the reaar broke lose i hammered it steered into the turn and banged 3rd , leaning so far into the pass seat i pushed my passenger all the way to the door. after we straightened up here comes the tire smoke wafting forward from the hatch area .it was awesome.like having a rippin fast gocart with ac cd amd heat. 205 45 16 nittos are unforgiving but they always let me know when its coming. who needs e brake!
