Double Din Stereo Problems (help)

Ever since ive had this car the stereo does not work at all. The deck lights up, you can hear the antenna try to go up when you press the power button, but no sound, and you cant hear the tape player moving at all when you press fwd or rew. The four pronged plug on the passenger side of the deck was off, i plugged that in, same with the little brown one. But still nothing. I also took the steering columb apart and the 4 plug prong was unplugged there too. So i plugged that back in. Now on the back of the deck, pass side, there is a prong that sticks up, there isnt any wire attatched to that at all. Plus i have a prong that hangs down from the driver side, two prong, red and blue i think, one is horizontal, and the other one is vertical to make a t shape. Where does that go. The car looks to have been rewired, i think he just forgot to plug in all the extra wires.

Plus, the fuse box is missing the fuse and the forks where the fuse would go for the stereo and the antenna, but the antenna still powers up.

How do you get the deck out, btw.

I would love to have another one, but whos to say if its the deck itself or if its the ******* wiring. I bet any money its the wiring, anyway to hook up the power with an alternate source to see if the deck will atleast turn on. Theres so many wires on the back of that *****.

Still missing that wire that sits sticks up from the back of the deck, just a ground? Anyone?

Its kinda wierd because you can stick a tape in, the deck knows that theres a tape so it puts the antenna down, if you press the power it will put the antenna up and turn over to radio, but there is no volume, and the tape will not fast forward or play. So the antenna sensors are working. the deck is working but its not playing tapes or reading the radio, almost like there is no power to that part of the deck. Anyone, anyone at all, know what they are doing with this deck?

here is a pic of the wiring diagram. it should be for an 84/85 model. seems like you have either a s or gs model. probably without a cassette deck and no equalizer. hope this helps. dont get confused by the backups. there are two backup shown. everything that has an arrow should be connected. the one in small print font that says backup is not plugged. i got confused when i saw that and didnt plug in the other backup and i didnt have a constant power. good luck. the factory sound systems are very tough and dont usually go out unless a resistor gets burnt. i am keeping my factory radio for my factory spec'd restoration project. have fun!

Thanks that does help. I do have a cassetplayer btw. I did say it was the double din. Btw, whats the backup, what if i plugged a power source into it accidently, im reminding you that the deck didnt work before or after i did this. Btw, about those 8 pin connectors that run to the "equilizer or amp", Two come off the back, black and white, both run under my dash and into the columb where they attatch to them selves. "black to white" Im prety sure this isnt correct.

well again i am not sure about your 84/85 but ill try to describe my knowlege of these stock systems. there is a 3 pin plug which is connected, a single pin plug which is the backup which should also be connected (power wires should be blue with a yellow stripe), a black 6 pin canon which is connected to another black canon and same for the white canon connected to another white canon. make sure you have the antenna plugged also otherwise you will get hardly any reception. im not sure about the tape deck because my 82/83 premium sound system is one unit with a separate eq and joystick. but i dont think you have a joystick. if you do have a joystick balancer there should be only one black 6 pin canon plugged into your head unit while the joystick splits 2 canons to the amplifiers and from the amps to your speakers. there is a white 8 pin canon which is for an eq or tape deck. it should be connected to complete the circuit otherwise your system might not function. please update to let us know if it works. otherwise your system might be dead and you should pick up a new one. there are a few premium sound systems selling on ebay right now. you can upgrade but still remain the factory look. good luck

Thanks, im going to tear apart the dash tomorow, i wish it was easier to take these things out, im so used to having a single din head unit that i can slide out with keys. I seen a nice bose double din for sale for 200 bucks with 320 watts. Not too bad, i might just buy one. When i have some money that is. Just worrying about exhaust and **** right now. Anyone wanna sell thier header? lol

bump. Just took out the deck. Wasnt as hard as i thought, found out that im not missing wires, im missing prongs. Look at this. Focus on the highlighted areads, each area had one prong missing, the main power, one rear speaker, and a mysterious one i dont know of.

That is true, im just going to go with an aftermarket "silver" coloured one to match the back, that will have to be in about a month. My next paycheck is going towards that unassembled racing beat header, some exhaust tubing, and bottle.
