Thumbs down doorjob dings

i'm sure a lot of us have them. my '84 SE has a series of doorjob dings on both quarterpanels, right where the side/top "corner" is above the rear wheel. a couple are bad enough to have broken the paint and there are a couple 3-5mm surface rust spots. i forsee a repaint or touch-up, but i would like to do most of the prep work myself when it comes time.

that said, is there a good way to smooth out the dings above the rear wheels without penetrating the body?

Pull out the inner wheel well cover and work out the dings from the back with a spoon, that is if you have the room. And no it's not a spoon for eating delicious soup with.
