I have the intermittent turn-signal-and-hazards-not-working problem, so I assumed there's a problem with the flasher unit, since that seems to be the most common diagnosis. Well, I pulled the CPU (I'm guessing that's the right part), and I'm looking at it and not really seeing any broken connections or failed solders. A bit of corrosion on the circuit board coating, but can't find anything that actually needs to be re-soldered or repaired. Which particular piece is the flasher unit, or is it the whole thing? Does it look alright to you guys?

 

the board looks good for the most part, i dont relly see any popped caps, did u hit anything with a voltmeter? maby chase down the circut well its plugged in?

 

Can we get a huge picture of the solder side?

 

Have you checked/lubed the turn signal unit on the column? Also check/replace the flasher relay. The round piece that clicks and plugs in under the dash.

 

do you have another known good flasher for comparison purposes?

 

Check solder joints at connectors for cracks.

 

How big of a crack does it need to be for the joint to fail. Under closer inspection a few of them have very fine hairline cracks surrounding the connectors, but it's hard to tell if they're cracked all the way through or not. None of the connectors are loose.

Even a tiny crack that you can barely see will do that. Resolder them all.

and if you aren't into soldering, replace the unit with a good unit.

 

I've had about 3 go bad on me through the years. I was never able to see any visible issues with the flasher or the board, but every time my issues went away when the board went into the trash. Just go to the junkyard and get another one.

While I'm still figuring out bad idle and exhaust pop in the other thread, on the bright side re-soldering the joints seems to have worked and my blinkers function again and I think it also fixed some other problems, like my seatbelt light coming on randomly...

 

Good for you! rebuilding small electronics and the like is more rewarding in my opinion than just trashing it and starting over. I commend your effort.
